  1. Aus 88-2published at 26 overs

    Smith 24, Khawaja 14

Steve Smith helps himself to another boundary, lovely drive through the off side again. Like all quality sportsmen/women, he appears to have so much time. He can pick his spot, read the pitch and bisect the field.

    Makes it look easy.

But that's a bit of a scare for the captain - good ball from Overton, climbing on him and rattling him on the glove before he knocks the ball away with his bat.

    That's tea.

One more wicket and England will be happy with this session I reckon. Moeen Ali is through another over - one more before tea.

Craig Overton continues, as Michael Vaughan makes the point on TMS that perhaps England's 'best' bowlers should be on against the best batsman in the world.

It's Overton who has done the damage this afternoon though. A bit of shape away from Usman Khawaja who has no footwork of note at the moment.

But James Anderson then misfields to allow the left-hander a couple of runs.

Every time the off-spinner bowls to Khawaja, you feel it's only a matter of time.

  7. Aus 78-2published at 23 overs

    Smith 17, Khawaja 11

Moeen finds a bit of pace, almost pinning Usman Khawaja. The flap of Moeen's whites suggests that the wind is picking up too, the doctor in the house?

Plenty of excited chat and chirp from behind the stumps but Khawaja survives another over.

Usman Khawaja averages 23 against England in Test cricket. They feel they have the wool over his eyes at the minute.

  9. ouch!

    Aus 78-2published at 22 overs

    Smith 17, Khawaja 11

Usman Khawaja has hurt himself. What happened there? He slips on the turf running between the wickets, could have been nasty that, a rolled ankle maybe.

He's going to be OK though.

I inherited a trombone from my grandad you know - can't play it. Maybe I'll dust it off if England take a lead into the weekend. And a double bass too - massive. Takes up a whole room.

Steve Smith is going to score a lorryload of runs you fear, he plays a fine shot away for four off Craig Overton, just punched through mid off.

There's a brass-off going on in the stands. Even though Billy the trumpeter has gone home, the Barmy Army have hired themselves a trombonist. The Richies have three trumpeters of their own.

It's hard to put the slow bowlers away on stick cricket isn't it, and maybe that's what Usman Khawaja struggles with too. He has no scares in that Moeen over though.

It's often the straight one from the spinner that does for Khawaja, rather than the one that turns.

Moeen hasn't bowled since Adelaide. He's been brought on because Khawaja's there and they think he's a little bit susceptible. It depends on Moeen getting it right, though.
