Abominable - lovely word Jack. We'll take that.

David Warner to come out swinging from the off?

Really sorry guys - woke up at 3:45 for a flight with the score 366-4... entirely my fault for waking up and cueing that abominable collapse. Nothing to do with the poor shots or vicious bowling. If I go back to sleep will Australia collapse?

A very bashful looking Jack en route to Stanstead

What was the worst shot in England's collapse? An award that nobody wants to win - my vote goes to Moeen Ai's 'nudge' to Steve Smith.

Woke up to drop kids at airport for school ski trip with Bairstow celebrating a hundred. Back home less than an hour later and we are all out... again. Aussies off the hook unless we get very quick wickets.

6 of our batsmen scored less than ‘Extras’. That’s dire.

If you're just joining us, if the dreaded five o'clock alarm has summoned you from sleep, don't be afraid to get in touch.

Even the most pessimistic England fan must have thought that they might still be batting at lunch. But no, it's not to be.

There didn't even appear to be any demons in the pitch to be honest. England's bowlers have got a huge task on their hands now.

NobbyNobbs:What was it Steve Smith said about two bad sessions losing us the Ashes? I think that definitely counts as one.

Pravin Kumar: The first session today was the England manual for making a mess of a winnable Test match.

Our very own Stephan Shemilt is currently talking on TMS, analysing the pace of Australia's attack.

Fast as it is, it didn't look like hurting England while Bairstow and Malan were cruising along. Malan took on Nathan Lyon and miscued a catch and that opened the floodgates.

Reasons to be cheerful? When Mark Stoneman gloved behind during a wickedly hostile spell after lunch yesterday England would have loved the thought of 400 on the board.

But how short is that score? 550, 600 was being banded about at one stage...

David Simpson: Time for England to do some damage and get the Aussies out for 250.

Angus Robb: Malan was dropped on 92, was he not? This collapse could have happened last night so take 403 and bowl well. Sounds simple

Death, taxes, queues on the M6 round Congleton and an England batting collapse.

    Absolutely textbook.

We've all seen plenty down the years but that was as bad as it gets. There appeared to be no danger at all, Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were looking serene, and before you know it England chuck away 6-35.

  14. Postpublished at 04:48 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

I'm off to quietly fume for a while. Although, on reflection, 403 isn't a bad score. It's just well below what England should have made.

Tom Rostance, the jinxer-in-chief, will take you through lunch and beyond.

Malan and Bairstow put on 237 runs between them. The rest of the England line-up managed 166. That, basically, isn't good enough.

Now, on the plus side, England have got over 400. And Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow played two fine innings. But you can't help but feel they've left 100 runs out there. And the speed with which they lost those wickets! That is what's so disappointing.

A collapse of 6-35 from out of nowhere in just under an hour.

    Dearie me.

    What an end.

Stuart Broad has played my favourite short of the morning and has tried to ramp Mitch Starc, when he's bowling at about 90mph. I have no idea how, but he's somehow managed to get an outside edge and Cameron Bancroft jogs back and takes a simple catch.

Dave Mitchell: While I’m annoyed about the collapse, I’d have taken 400 when Cook went yesterday.

Matt: Shocking from England this. Malan threw his and Bairstow’s fantastic work away. Stupid shot to play against Lyon and has caused this collapse. Should have been getting 450+ here. Australia fully back into the game now, and with momentum.
