  1. Eng 384-6published at 110 overs

Chris Woakes rides the bounce and gets a thick outside edge that flies over the slips for four. Steve Smith, lurking in the slips, mimes the shot in response. He won't mind that too much. Woakes negotiates the rest of the over safely.

If you get good pitches there's always a bit of action. The partnership was special but you always know that if there's one wicket then two are three can come quickly.

Moeen's dismissal was weak, you've got to know when to leave the ball.

  3. Eng 380-6published at 109 overs

    Bairstow 118, Woakes 0

Oh! An edge from Bairstow, and it flies away for four! That's streaky - there's some away swing there for Hazlewood and Bairstow goes hard, but it flies through the yawning gap between slip and gully and goes for four. Hazlewood looks thoroughly aggrieved.

Bairstow then grunts in frustration as he plays a lavish cut, and swishes at fresh air. It's so important for Bairstow to stay there. That'll be four, though, as Bairstow swipes a delivery over Usman Khawaja's head.

I'd practise your ducking, fellas. Josh Hazlewood is back into the attack. This could be similar to the barrage Mark Stoneman faced yesterday.

That's what the Waca can do, you have to get used to the bounce. Moeen stood up and tried to play it and balloons a catch to Steve Smith.

Sometimes you just need a breakthrough and you can get two or three wickets back-to-back.

  6. Eng 372-6published at 108 overs

    Cummins 27-8-80-2

Some predictable short stuff comes Chris Woakes' way and he ducks the first ball, before fending a bit awkwardly at the second. The ball strikes his hand, actually, and Woakes grins at Cummins, who offers a bit of friendly batting advice. A wicket maiden.

That Moeen dismissal isn't getting any better. He just pushed at it. I thought the ball took the edge of the bat but actually, Moeen's got a healthy bit of bat on ball there to help the ball to Steve Smith.

Chris Woakes makes his way out to the middle and Jonny Bairstow comes straight over to him to give him some advice. These two have to make ti through to lunch. They've got just over half an hour to go.

And that Moeen wicket is probably why Malan was so furious. One wicket brings two and all that...

    Moeen c Smith b Cummins 0 (Eng 372-6)

Oh, Moeen. Out for a duck!

That was horribly predictable. Pat Cummins went short, Moeen fended at it, the bat dangling away from his body, and the ball took the outside edge and went to Steve Smith at second slip at a pleasing height. Catching practice, as Tom Rostance next to me remarks. Oh dear...

Even though he made his maiden Test ton and put England in a great position, Malan was still livid at his dismissal. A blast of the air with his bat, looking at the ground all the way off, helmet unmoved. His head was still bowed when he made it back to the dressing room. I tried to take a picture, but was accosted by a security guard.

I did think that Australia would be looking to have a 200-run lead at the end of the first innings but it looks like we might need to score 1200 now...

  14. Eng 372-5published at 107 overs

Malan's 140 came from 227 balls, with 19 fours and one six. An epic innings. Moeen's the new man in, and he stands at the non striker's and watches as Jonny Bairstow whips a four off his pads.

    Malan c sub b Lyon 140 (Eng 368-5)

    What a catch!

It was going to take something special to get rid of Dawid Malan, and it's come in the form of a sprawling, full-length dive from sub fielder Peter Handscomb. Malan goes down the wicket, miscues a drive and the outside edge spoons up towards Handscomb at backward point. He runs, dives and gets two hands underneath the ball. Great catch, and a superb innings comes to an end.

I wouldn't say morale is high in the TMS box at the moment but they are discussing record Test scores.

If you were wondering, there's work to be done if England want to match the 952-6 declared Sri Lanka scored against India in 1997.

Ridiculous - Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340!

  17. Eng 368-4published at 106 overs

Short from Pat Cummins, and Jonny Bairstow ducks and weaves, before rifling a couple through mid-wicket. Cummins likes the short theory and carries on with it, and Bairstow bends his back while Tim Paine does some acrobatics.

I'm trying to think of many grounds that are lined with barbed wire. To keep intruders out? Perhaps before it's been to keep English cricketers in? Maybe today it's to stop Aussie bowlers from escaping....

  19. Eng 366-4published at 105 overs

Nathan Lyon mixes up his speeds and Jonny Bairstow whacks a short ball through mid-wicket, before Malan comes shuffling down the pitch and drives for one. Steve Smith lifts up his baggy green and scratches his head as Bairstow cracks another single to end the over.

This commentary box seems a lot happier today. These two batsmen have played incredibly well. Bairstow is a tough player, he doesn't give his wicket away. Just what England needed - but there's still a long way to go in the Test match...
