  1. Eng 403-9published at 115 overs

If I were Josh Hazlewood - and I'm very much not - I'd just bowl at the stumps. Anderson is backing so far away that he's leaving all three exposed. He plays a beautiful forward defensive to the last ball of the over, mind.

    Nice. Very nice.

I take everything back. Stuart Broad has just smashed a six!

That has gone miles! He takes a step back, thrashes his arms and it goes over the grass bank and the balcony behind him. What a shot! That takes England over the 400 mark. He gets a single off the next ball.

  4. Postpublished at 04:34 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

Stuart Broad has a Test century. We're very much into clutching at straws territory.

  5. Eng 396-9published at 114 overs

The grin on Mitch Starc's face tells you everything you need to know about the way James Anderson is playing the short ball. He's, essentially, just walking out of the way of it. He makes it through the over, though.

  6. Eng 396-9published at 113.2 overs

Stuart Broad makes batting look like a modern art installation. He jumps into the air to lay a Mitch Starc short ball and then takes a step to the side, exposing is stumps, and cracks the ball over mid-wicket for three. That brings Anderson on strike. Anderson wanted the extra run there. Two guesses where this will be...

Lunch is delayed until 5am because England are nine down. I'd also like to point out that that morale post was by Tom Rostance, and not me.

England were in such a strong position thanks to that partnership and now look.

They have lost five for 25 in 37 balls and in 35 minutes.

England were 368-4, right? We didn't all collectively dream that?

It's a classic tailender dismissal as Craig Overton fends at a short ball that Josh Hazlewood digs into his body, and Cameron Bancroft takes the simplest of catches. What a mess.

England love a quick collapse. There were 25 minutes between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow's wickets falling.

Mark: All the great work provided by two men is about to be undone by the rest of this inadequate 'team batting' display. Why throw your wicket away, it is essentially your 'cricket life', does it not really sink in?

Paul Beard: Hi Australia, we’re England. Here’s the initiative, we didn’t really know what to do with i

Stuart Broad gets his traditional Australia welcome, and then does the smart thing by getting off strike to his first ball. Craig Overton, meanwhile, gets his outside edge tickled by a belter of a delivery from Starc.

The hoover Starc, he mops up the tail every time.

The whole ground are on their feet for Jonny Bairstow, that's a special innings. He has been under so much pressure.

He tried to play that too square but he has played so well. He just lost his rhythm, he knows that the tail will get blown away so he has to get on with it.

    Ugh.

A fine knock comes to an ungainly end. Jonny Bairstow is beaten all ends up with a full, straight, fast one from Mitch Starc. An inside edge ensures that middle stump gets knocked out of the ground. He walks off with his head down and Stuart Broad gives him a pat on the back as he makes his way off. It's been a fine innings from Bairstow.

    That's a collapse of 3-21 in 25 balls.

Anyway, here's Mitch Starc to give them some respite.

  17. Eng 389-7published at 111 overs

Craig Overton, who did so well at Adelaide, is the new man in. He safely negotiates Josh Hazlewood's final delivery.

That is a soft dismissal. You can't be gifting Australia wickets. Just try and hang in there and give him more time to score.

    Woakes c Cummins b Hazlewood 8 (Eng 389-7)

    That's such a good catch!

Oh, England. Josh Hazlewood angles the ball onto his hips, Chris Woakes tries to help it on its way and smacks it in the air. The ball files down to long leg and Pat Cummins judges it really well. He runs and falls forward, getting himself into a good position to get both hands under the ball.

England have lost three wickets for 21 runs.
