Pat Cummins is going to continue. A very good bouncer comes Malan's way and he arches his back in a manner a yoga teacher would be proud of, and gets his body and bat well out of the way. The duo nurdle a couple of single, before Malan does well to angle a short ball awa from his face.

Adam Gilchrist, meanwhile, has been inspecting Tim Paine's hands. He says he's got a massive bruise on his right hand from the constant thud of ball on glove.

Richard Arends: It's 10.30 in New York, I have two finals at Columbia tomorrow, really should study but can't bring myself to stop watching. Could Malan's century be considered an act of god and get me out of them?

August and after: England Ashes centuries are like buses...

Nathan Bright: Expecting my first child in 10 weeks. Thankful to Bairstow and Malan for making my parenting training so enjoyable.

    Bairstow 101, Malan 138

Ooh, the first ball is a loosener from Lyon, and Malan plants a foot forward and drives him handsomely for a couple. The pair at the crease then tap a single here and there, playing carefully but keeping the score ticking along and not allowing Lyon to dictate terms. A sharp single from Malan brings applause from the crowd.

What is par for England from this point then?

Four years ago Australia won the toss and batted and amassed 385, with Steve Smith scoring 111.

They went on to win by 150 runs.

The players are taking in some refreshments, which gives us a chance to look at some Bairstow stats.

It's his fourth Test hundred and his first in an Ashes series. It came from 185 balls with 15 fours.

    Bairstow 100, Malan 134

There's emotion all over Jonny Bairstow's face right now, but there's determination there, too. He wanders away from the crease after every Pat Cummins delivery, breathing deeply, just calming himself. Bairstow defends and then shows some quick reactions to get under a bumper from Cummins. A maiden.

This is England's highest fifth-wicket partnership against Australia, beating Denis Compton and Eddie Paynter's 206-run stand at Trent Bridge in 1938.

Dawid Malan helps Bairstow celebrate by cracking a short, wide delivery away for four. Bairstow, by the way, had a cheeky headbutt of his helmet as he reached three figures. Excellent work all round.

It might be his best innings. The pressure on the England team at 2-0 down and with events off the field was huge. The batsmen had failed before this innings. So to play without a blemish, a nick, a chance - he's batted beautifully.

If he got up the order a bit he might get a few more hundreds too...

That's it! An Ashes century for Jonny Bairstow!

An almighty cheer comes tumbling out of Jonny Bairstow's mouth as he clips a single away. He raises his bat to the dressing room, all of whom are on their feet, and looks to the sky before he gets a huge bear hug off Dawid Malan. What a moment for Bairstow.

  12. Eng 351-4published at 100.4 overs

A 79mph bouncer from Mitch Marsh to Jonny Bairstow, and he ducks. Smith brings the field in and Shaun Marsh, previously on the boundary, fields a drive from Bairstow to keep him on strike.

  13. Eng 351-4published at 100.2 overs

Shot! On to the back foot goes Jonny Bairstow and he forces Mitch Marsh's first delivery away through the covers for another boundary. Oh, and the field spreads and Bairstow plays it beautifully. Soft hands, angled bat, and the ball runs away for two.

    Bairstow goes to 99...

    Malan 130, Bairstow 93

Dawid Malan takes the time to do a bit of gardening before he swings, and swings hard. Four! A thick outside edge as he went hard at Pat Cummins, but he's got it safely away. Tim Paine then concedes two byes as a Cummins delivery sneaks through him, but he follows it up with another superb, two-handed take high above his head.

Oh, that's such a good shot from Malan! He leans back, staying on the back foot and cracks a cut away to the boundary.

It is not just the 200 stand - it is the quality of it. Malan and Bairstow have breathed new life into the series.

    Bairstow 93, Malan 122

Jonny Bairstow is tremendously quick between the wickets. A quick flick off his toes and he goes haring down the wicket, and turns quickly to make it two. That brings up the 200 partnership for England, from 365 balls. "200 partnership!" my workmate next to me mutters in a tone of genuine surprise. Bairstow and Dawid Malan shake hands in a tremendously polite fashion, before Bairstow celebrates by clipping a Mitch Marsh full toss for four.
