Steve Smith has remembered that he's got Mitch Marsh in his ranks. He's on in place of Josh Hazlewood.

It's noticeable that having had a long day bowling the Aussies are not as hostile and quick as usual. Starc is bowling Jimmy Anderson sort of pace at the moment.

A day's bowling in the heat tires you out as a human being, I don't care where you come from.

England have been immaculate - like opening batsmen in fact.

Tom McCarron: Dare I say it but it looks like England are actually playing Test Match cricket.

  4. Eng 328-4published at 98 overs

Shot! Back to back boundaries from Jonny Bairstow, freeing his arms and driving beautifully through the covers. Pat Cummins is less than impressed and whistles down a bouncer that Bairstow gets safely under. There's some awkward bounce there for Cummins as he gets one to rise on Bairstow, who gets a rap on the gloves for his trouble, but he gets in line and defends the rest of the over.

Mitch Starc's off for a breather. He gets a hearty round of applause from the Richies for his morning's work. Here's Pat Cummins.

We were told that the first few days have been sold out, but there are lots fewer inside the Waca than this time yesterday. Could it be that the home fans don't want to watch England bat? The Richies have just arrived, mind, so all is well with the world.

  7. Eng 320-4published at 97 overs

There's a weird sort of half-appeal from behind the stumps as Malan lets a short ball fly across him, his hands safely out of the way. Short from Hazlewood but not short enough, and Malan swivels and pulls for two. A cover drive, not quite timed but effective enough, adds another couple to the total.

Chris Broad, dad of England bowler Stuart, scored 162 as England scored 592-8 declared in the first innings in 1986. David Gower hit a classy (surely?) ton too, and keeper Jack Richards also hit a hundred.

It was still only a draw...

    Malan 117, Bairstow 79

Four! Full, too full, from Starc, and Dawid Malan tonks it away through the covers. Starc responds with a delivery that shapes down leg and Malan chases it. Tim Paine gets to show his full array of movements as he dives to his right, takes the ball over his shoulder and then goes leaping in the air to collect a Starc bouncer.

Smith sets a field that telegraphs a short ball, Malan ducks, and then does well to get his feet out of the way and slam his bat down on a fine yorker.

The tape is out for Jonny Bairstow's bat - that cover drive has just caused a few splinters. Malan gets in on the act too.

Josh Hazlewood has immediately got a better length. They were either really short or too full yesterday.

It's hard at Perth to hit the top of off stump. You have to bowl so much fuller than most grounds so it's easy to serve up half-volleys.

  12. Eng 311-4published at 95 over

Josh Hazlewood angles a delivery down leg and Dawid Malan gets the slightest of tickles on it for one.

Four! That's the first boundary of the day as Jonny Bairstow creams a drive through the covers. Dearie me, that's a good-looking shot.

Hazlewood responds with a delivery that just tails away from Bairstow, but it plays it with soft hands and it goes on the bounce towards third slip.

GarethClarke24: That review looked poor in real time. In slow motion it looked plain stupid. Steve Smith must have watched "Stuart Broad's 101 greatest reviews" before this series started.

  14. Eng 306-4published at 94 overs

A run! A genuine run! It's a yorker from Starc and Dawid Malan falls over as he tries to get his feet out of the way, but he gets bat on it, and the ball races to third man. Jonny Bairstow tries the same thing two balls later but a thick inside edge cannons into his pads.

A fine slide from Pat Cummins cuts off a Bairstow cover drive to stop England nabbing another single.

It’s a leisurely 4:30pm here in Hawaii! Just hoping Bairstow and Malan can get me through to evening meal at 7:30 - would be a shame if they ruin the wife’s 50th birthday!

Jonny Bairstow ignores a few off-stump tempters from Josh Hazlewood, yanking his bat out of the way. The ball goes through low to Tim Paine, before Bairstow bends his way underneath a bouncer. After almost every ball, Bairstow wanders off to short leg to fiddle with his helmet or his gloves. Proper concentration. It's a maiden, though.

  17. 'Broad should be captain'published at 02:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Radio 5 live

If Stokes comes back in I see him batting at five, Bairstow at six and Moeen at seven. Malan could move up to three - all of a sudden you have a team coming together.

Batting Bairstow down with the tail makes him a worse player, ergo it makes the team worse. The same could be said with making Joe Root captain. He should be concentrating on being the best batsman in the world.

He should bat at three and not be captain - I would have made Stuart Broad captain.

    Starc 21-5-79-2

Were I Steve Smith, I wouldn't listen to anyone but Nathan Lyon when it comes to using DRS. He was able to see from the deep point boundary yesterday that Dawid Malan wasn't going to be out lbw, and Smith ignored him, to his cost.

Starc - who didn't look entirely convinced on the decision to review there - goes full again, and Malan defends. Three maidens to start the day.

  19. Not outpublished at 91.3 overs

And it is indeed missing! The impact was umpire's call, but that ball is sliding down leg.

So Dawid Malan survives and, crucially, Australia have lost their second review. England still have both of theirs in the bag.

  20. Postpublished at 02:42 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2017

It's hit Malan very low on the pad. That looks likes it's missing leg to me...
