Why haven't England played well enough? It's easy to say that the batsman are at fault because they haven't made enough big scores but England have now lost three in the last five away from home where they have scored 400.

You could say that the batsman should be more ruthless and make more runs but what about the bowlers.

Why aren't they taking wickets? There's been no firepwoer to try to come back at the Australian batsman to try to keep them in check whereas Australia have always had a bowler who can come up with something.

Paul Shaddock: So it appears that the England cricket team can’t play against spin bowling nor fast bowling. Perhaps we could ask all future opponents to bowl underarm against us.

Australia have regained the Ashes. Here's a quick rundown:

    • There was hope for England when there was a three-hour delay to day five at the Waca because of some leaking covers and damp patches on the pitch.
    • But play eventually resumed with Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow at the crease and England on 132-4 - 127 runs behind.
    • Bairstow (14) was bowled by Josh Hazlewood and Moeen Ali (11) quickly followed after he was trapped LBW by Nathan Lyon.
    • Dawid Malan's resistance is ended on 54 before the wickets of Craig Overton (12), Stuart Broad (0) and Chris Woakes (22) see England bowled out for 218 as they lose the Ashes.
    • Having lost the first three Tests, England are now battling to avoid a whitewash.

England coach Trevor Bayliss on TMS: "Their bowling attack has been fantastic. All credit to them.

"If you haven't got fast bowlers, you haven't got them. We have world-class bowlers but they have found it challenging in these conditions."

England have three legends of the game in Alastair Cook, Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson. It depends how they manage their retirements. It's coming sooner rather than later. I do think they they can all play a part in the series of 2019 but you don't see many fairytales in sport.

England have to manage the senior core of the side and make sure that if they are all to go together in 2019 they are playing well enough to be in the team.

Australia captain Steve Smith on BT Sport: "We know how much it means to everyone in Australia. To wrap it up in three matches has been exceptional.

"The three fast bowlers are absolute superstars. To have those three guys on the park at the same time has taken a lot of planning. Nathan Lyon also is bowling as well as I've seen him.

"We've had ups and downs. The selectors copped a lot over a period of time for making bold changes but each guy has come in and done a terrific job."

More from Steve Smith on BT Sport: "We don't worry too much about England's players, we just execute our skills and do what we do well. Ensure that you can do what you can to be successful.

"I'm incredibly excited about celebrating with the boys and all of the staff. We have achieved something special. We deserve to have a good celebration. It's not every day you get the urn back."

  15. Australia name unchanged squadpublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

The dust has barely settled in Perth but Australia have already named an unchanged squad for the fourth Test at the MCG.

Mitchell Starc is in the squad but will be assessed. If he's not fit Jackson Bird will come into the side.

Australia squad for Melbourne: Steve Smith (c), David Warner (vc), Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird

Ben Stokes not being in Australia is all his own fault but England missed him. He wouldn't have made a huge difference but they missed his character. He might have got England a draw in Brisbane.

There have to be changes in Melbourne next week.

We'll have to wait and see how he pulls up. He'll be wanting to play in Melbourne - he wasn't complaining about it and he just wants to get out there."

Alex Boyles: Surely no one can be surprised by the outcome of the Ashes. The story of the summer was our batsmen’s lack of ruthlessness and/or ability to drop anchor and the shenanigans off field show which team approached the series in the most professional manner.
