  3. 'It hurts'published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

England coach Trevor Bayliss on BT Sport: "We've spoken all the way through about having to learn, sometimes from the opposition. Steve Smith, the concentration he shows and his hunger for runs - we can take lessons from that.

"Most of our guys have shown they can play - but they need to do it for longer periods. It hurts every time you lose a game- the boys are not going to give up."

England captain Joe Root, speaking to BT Sport, on his captaincy: "I felt like I tried absolutely everything here - I felt I used every resource, every plan. Unfortunately we couldn't get that breakthrough.

"The effort from the guys and the way we went about it, even though things weren't going our way, was excellent. Unfortunately we couldn't quite turn the game how we wanted to."

  8. 'We need to be smarter'published at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

England captain Joe Root on BT Sport: "It's frustrating that we've not managed to be ruthless when we've been on top. They are harsh lessons that we've got to learn very quickly.

"Maybe it's a lack of experience at times. Sometimes things can slip away from you without you realising. Maybe we needed to be a little bit smarter on occasions.

"But credit to Australia - when they were up against it they fought back into things and won those key moments."

  10. 'We've played well at times'published at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

England coach Trevor Bayliss on BT Sport: "They've played better cricket for long periods. We've played well at times but not for long enough.

"We have actually played some good cricket but the Australians have shown us that you've got to play at that level a full five days. They've done that better than us."

  12. 'No reason Cook & Anderson can't continue'published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2017

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to BT Sport, on Alastair Cook and James Anderson: "They'd both agree that they are closer to the end than the start. But there's absolutely no reason why they can't continue to be apart of this England team in the future."

Stats, and particularly averages, don't always tell us everything, but Alastair Cook is having a miserable tour.

Cook currently averages 13.83 in this series. He's scored 83 runs in six innings, with a highest score of 37.

That's less than Chris Woakes (14.66) and Craig Overton (20.66). In fact, only three Australians have a lower average than Cook. Pat Cummins is averaging 46!

Coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to BT Sport, on England's shortage of pace bowlers: "You grow up on the type of wickets that you do. Skill-wise, it is a difficult for the English players. You've got to have some extra pace, but you've also got to have some skills with it.

"We've got a number of players coming here for the first time who have done reasonably well. If they're around in four years' time hopefully they'll ll do well."

England's batsmen - and Joe Root and Alastair Cook in particular - have come in for criticism but it is the bowling attacks which have won and lost the Ashes.

Australia have taken 60 England wickets at an average of 26.3.

England have taken 37 Australian wickets at an average of 47.1...

James Anderson has taken 12 wickets in this series at an average of 25.83, which is a plus for England.

The negative? Stuart Broad averages 61.80 with the ball and has taken five wickets, and Moeen's three wickets at 105.33. Ouch.

On the bright side, that's now 10 extra nights sleep I'm going to get now that I (stupidly) didn't think I was going to get at the start of the series.

    BBC Test Match Special

England coach Trevor Bayliss on TMS: "Obviously it's disappointing, it wasn't the plan. To be honest we have been outplayed, they have been too good for us. I can't complain about our endeavour, we just weren't good enough.

"We go to the next match looking to win it. Our lack of runs in the first innings has been key. Even in this match we got 400 and it should have been more."
