And that's drinks at the SCG.

An intriguing session so far - several lovely shots but the bowlers beating the bat a few times too. Australia perhaps edging it after that Stoneman wicket.

  2. Eng 39-1published at 14 overs

Cook drives square into the gap and picks up one.

Cummins will get a go at Vince - but the Hampshire batsman is equal to the first few.

The Aussie quick then belts down a bouncer that Vince ducks under - it's so high it's called a wide, much to the annoyance of skipper Steve Smith.

Vince has got a lot to play for. You watch him play and he looks like he's got it all. But how much can he stretch that concentration?

  4. Eng 37-1published at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

    Cook 10, Vince 2

An elegant drive from Vince (he's got plenty of those in his locker) that picks out the fielder for no run.

Hazlewood strays straight and Vince flicks it round the corner deftly to get off the mark with two.

A few nice defensive shots follow. So far solid enough from Vince.

I'm following from under my quilt in bed next to the missus! I'm guessing about 22 degrees and humidity high. Got the phone on night mode so the light level is low. No sudden movements and I should be fine.

  6. Eng 35-1published at 02:35 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

Cook is slowly getting into his game out there, moving his feet well to drive square for two.

A very promising sign for England as Cook brings out that sumptuous straight drive he used so effectively at Melbourne to collect his first boundary of the day.

A less promising sign as Cook cuts loosely and misses, with Cummins raising his hands in frustration.

Tomas der Baté: Quite a few England batsmen getting starts in this series. Unfortunately they are usually followed quickly by an end!

Philip Carr: Can't help but feel that if Stoneman fails in the second innings, people will start calling for his head.

I worked with Michael Carberry over one winter when I was making 40s and 50s but not kicking on. He used to make me bat two to three hour sessions playing a front foot drive while he varied the length with the ball. I found it challenging but I went back that season and averaged 70-odd. He improved my length of concentration in a way I didn't know was possible in such a short space of time.

    Cook 4, Vince 0

Michael Carberry was of course dropped after that return. Will Alastair Cook's opening partner change yet again for the New Zealand series?

For now, Cook works it round the corner for a single to return James Vince, another under-pressure player, to the strike.

A leave, a defence and another leave - the last ball whistling past off stump but Vince leaving well enough on length.

A good ball from Cummins to greet new man James Vince, who fends it away into the covers.

It's a horrendous position that Stoneman gets himself into. He's given it away. He had enough time to leave the ball or drop the hands.

It's a poor shot. He was playing at a ball he didn't have to play at. He couldn't drop his hands in time

    Stoneman c Paine b Cummins 24 (Eng 28-1)

This time Cummins finds a bit more bounce and Stoneman unnecessarily pushes at it, nicking behing to Tim Paine.

He didn't need to play at that one and another promising start amounts to little.

Tremendous work from Cummins to scramble Stoneman's mind though.

  15. Eng 28-0published at 9.4 overs

Another lovely punch down the ground from Stoneman rolls away to the fence, teasing the chasing fielders all the way but finally trickling over the rope.

Good response from Cummins, getting a touch of shape away and beating Stoneman's uncertain fend.

What are the chances...? Anyone else from London, Ontario?

Hazlewood is wobbling the seam and getting a bit of nip off the pitch. Again Cook pushes at it and again the ball beats the bat. Hands on Australian heads.

A few better defensive strokes from Cook follow. A threatening maiden from Hazlewood.

  18. Eng 24-0published at 8.1 overs

Here does come Hazlewood back into the attack, having changed ends to replace Starc...

And that might be exactly why he changed ends - that fast off-break again drawing Cook into a loose drive and beating the outside edge.

This is going to be a proper Test. There's swing, bounce, Cook is moving his feet... I'm revved up.
