Cook clips off his legs for one, before Vince smacks the final ball away for four. It was wide and Vince somewhat flayed at it, but got enough bat to get it up and over point to the fence.

  4. Eng 59-1published at 20.2 overs

Starc fires it down leg, Cook flicks at it and the Aussies go up as Paine catches it behind.

It's a big appeal but the umpire is unmoved. Quite rightly - that brushed Cook's leg on the way through and missed the bat.

Hampshire Flag‏: I'm following from a cold, dark snowy Oshawa, Ontario (not too far from London, Ontario). Hoping for good things from Hampshire's Vince and Crane!

You guys out in Ontario should form a cricket society or something and watch the matches together.

  6. Eng 59-1published at 20 overs

Cook defends a few from Lyon before backing away to cut in front of square and jog a couple.

Another decent drive into the covers allows Cook to pick up a single. The opener is looking much better against the off-spinner than he did earlier in the series.

The bad news for regular listeners of this show is that James Vince is looking really rather good.

  8. Eng 56-1published at 19 overs

    Cook 18, Vince 12

Vince pulls away a short one but Mitchell Marsh makes a fine diving stop to prevent the run.

Starc drops short but Vince easily weaves out of the way.

Hello. Starc goes short again but this time Vince gets it up and over the infield and away for four. Excellent improvisation to play the cut shot in front of square.

Riveria Maya in Mexico. Hoping for a good partnership for Cook and Vince (please no mockers!).

  10. Eng 52-1published at 18.1 overs

Starc serves up a long hop and Vince clatters it through the covers for four.

You've seen it before, but the Vince cover drive is always gorgeous. That's also 50 up for England. Decent progress so far, but plenty to keep the bowlers interested.

Alastair Cook has been run out once in 257 dismissals. He was run out for 190 in the third Test against India in 2012 at Kolkata. He's been involved in seven run-outs in total.

First bit of turn from Lyon as he gets it to bite past the outside edge of Cook's bat. That was close.

Might it also suggest this SCG pitch will provide regular turn later in the Test?

For now, a maiden for Lyon.

I see your London, Ontario and I’ll raise you a late night revision session in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Cook 18, Vince 4

Starc re-enters the fray for Hazlewood and is immediately driven away square by Cook, who picks up two more.

Cook flicks off his pads and scampers another couple after a brief hesitation. A better throw might have had the opener worried.

A short ball is pulled away for a single, Cook starting to go through all the shots in his repertoire.

Vince cuts powerfully away off the last but can only pick out the fielder.

Here is Lyon, with Cook nurdling it square for one.

Lyon goes full and Vince drives away for two. Another lovely-looking shot. No obvious first-day spin for Lyon.

Whenever Stoneman gets a half decent ball he gets out. If we had any depth he (and Vince) would be done, but don't see who could come in vs NZ.

    Marlo, London.

    Cook 12, Vince 2

Hazlewood drops short to Cook, who checks his hook shot, ensuring the ball doesn't carry to man at fine leg, instead allowing Cook to jog one.

Vince defends or leaves the rest of the over.

Nathan Lyon looks to be warming up for his first bowl of the Test.

It looks like a pretty good pitch. England would like to see a bit more sunshine but it hasn't jagged around too much.

There's been a little bit for everyone this morning. You feel there's enough in it for the bowlers - the ball is carrying past the outside edge nicely. Cook's footwork has been excellent.
