I make that 4 out of 5 wickets totally self-inflicted. Cook the only one to fall to a good ball. Wafting the bat outside off stump or clipping straight to fielders is just brainless cricket.

  3. 'A massive disappointment'published at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

England assistant coach Paul Farbrace, speaking to TMS: "Dawid Malan has shown his quality throughout this series and Rooty was playing the best innings he's played throughout the series. You could see the disappointment in him. To lose those two wickets in the last five minutes is a massive disappointment.

"It's a very quiet dressing room tonight, because people know how hard Dawid and Rooty worked to get themselves into that position. To see Rooty get out the way he did, he's incredibly disappointed and frustrated.

"He knows he wants to convert more 50s into 100s. It's not something any coach needs to sit him down and say 'do you realise you need to convert more fifties?'"

Bairstow is not the most brilliant starter. It was always a possibility he might feel for a ball early on. Both dismissals were disappointing, but Root's more so as the set batsmen.

  5. What have you missed?published at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

A keenly contested - and very watchable - opening day which ended with a late, cruel twist for England.

In brief: Rain delays the start by two hours, England start well, Australia quicks initiate a top-order wobble, England fight back, and Australia land two potentially crucial late blows.

Where Mark Stoneman (a dashing 24), James Vince (a fluent 25), and Alastair Cook (an Alastair Cook-esque39) failed in not kicking on, Joe Root and Dawid Malan succeeded.

From a tricky 95-3, Root and Malan showed great application and no little style to add 133, but the skipper fell in the penultimate over of the day for 83. It is his highest score of the series, but rarely has he looked so disappointed.

To compound matters, Jonny Bairstow - coming in at six instead of a nightwatchman - fell in the next over.

Malan ended the day unbeaten on 55, but it felt like a footnote as the Aussies left the field with grins all over their faces.

Credit to Australia, who have done very well to take five wickets on a very good pitch for batting. A lot of those can be put down to batsman error, but Josh Hazlewood especially bowled threateningly all day - that wicket of Jonny Bairstow was a just reward.

Always feel England are only ever one delivery away from calamity when batting. Not something one can say for our opponents.

I think it's Australia's day, just by a bit. For much of the day England made a good fist of it but I think those two late wickets will frustrate them. The shadow moving across the pitch came in to a difficult zone for the batsmen and it was exactly that moment when Joe Root was out.

That final 10-15 minutes of the day are essentially England's Ashes in microcosm.

Battle to a position of strength and squander it at an alarming pace through mistakes.

At 07:50 GMT, England were 220-3 and on top. The new ball is taken, Joe Root chips to square leg and Jonny Bairstow nicks off.

Australia will go in tonight feeling they're in a positive position to really knock over the tail. England's tail doesn't fill you with excitement.

No time for the next man to come out to the crease so that is the end of day one at the SCG.

England looked set for a big total just 10 minutes ago. Now, Australia will feel they are just one wicket away from being able to go at the tail.

Dawid Malan is unbeaten on a gritty 55, while Moeen Ali has all night to think how he's going to approach his innings.

A horrible wake up for those England fans just joining us.

That was an excellent ball from Hazlewood. He got that one to shape and bring Bairstow forward.

    Bairstow c Paine b Hazlewood 5 (Eng 233-5)

The new ball is ripping the heart out of England.

It's an excellent delivery from Hazlewood and it tempts Bairstow into pushing at it in that corridor of uncertainty.

Just a bit of movement away and that does for the keeper, who edges behind to his counterpart Tim Paine.

It didn't look like being so just 10 minutes ago but it's firmly Australia's day now.

It's interesting England didn't go with a nightwatchman but then, who could they send out? Chris Woakes is their usual man and he's injured.

Josh Hazlewood will bowl the final over of the day. Can Australia nip another one out?

Sure enough, Jonny Bairstow survives. There was an inside edge and it was going down anyway.

Bairstow also scampered a single to get off the strike during all that.
