That was a loosener from Starc, and it looked like quite a tired loosener.

That was a loosener from Starc, and it looked like quite a tired loosener.
Starc certainly looks short of full fitness and pace, sending down a half volley that Malan clatters away through the covers for four.
Too straight from Starc and Malan clips it away for a couple to move onto 49.
Seven overs remaining in the day, so Mitchell Starc is on for one final burst, replacing Pat Cummins.
Lyon 26-4-61-0
Lyon is into his 26th over of the day, Root works him away to square leg and dashes a quick single.
Can the off-spinner find some bite off the pitch again to Malan? Not if he bowls on his legs, allowing the number five to clip into leg for one.

It's been one of those days for Malan where it's been tough. When he's had a ball to hit, he's hit it to the man, and they've bottled it up. But he hasn't given it away. He's learned to adapt.
Root 71, Malan 42
Root nudges into off for one, with Malan then pulling a tad loosely round the corner for another single.
The England skipper punches nicely off the back foot but is limited to just one thanks to Lyon's chase in the covers.
Malan works Cummins round the corner for one and that's 200 up for England.
Impressive rebuilding effort from this pair, despite some nervy moments. Can they take England through to the close?
Close! Malan dances down the pitch to Lyon but clips it straight to Bancroft at short leg. The Aussie opener whips it back towards the stumps but misses. Malan would've been gone with a direct hit.
He grabs a single off the last after his latest reprieve.

This young chap has collected signatures on the back of his shirt. When the autograph is illegible, he's printed who it is. The odd stellar name, like Steve Smith. Others, like Steve O'Keefe, not so coveted.
Root 69, Malan 39
Thanks Amy, stellar stuff. Pat Cummins to Joe Root, who just knocks away or leaves the first four deliveries of the over.
Short ball next up - Root pulls it upwards, where's that going? Oof, the skipper is lucky as the ball drops between two fielders out behind square. That's a ropey shot, playing out too far in front of his body and with his feet leaving the ground.
In short, Joe Root and Dawid Malan rescuing England after another top-order collapse.
The skipper has a half-century and Malan is closing in on his own, the pair having shared a much-needed century stand from 95-3.
Mark Stoneman and James Vince both batted fluently before falling when well set, while Alastair Cook followed up his 244 not out in Melbourne with 39.
Pat Cummins has two wickets, Josh Hazlewood one and Nathan Lyon, on a pitch offering some turn, none.

And that is my cue to leave. Jack Skelton will take you through the rest of the innings.
Oh, that's close! Joe Root, on 66, takes a step forward and tries to turn the ball past short leg but the ball bounces up into Cameron Bancroft's shoe. It's in the air, fleetingly, but it would have been an almighty effort from Bancroft to cling on to that. Root works himself a single to keep things ticking along.
There's going to be a brief hold-up in play while Joe Root dresses himself. I've got no idea either.

That's the second century partnership between these two in Test cricket. It took 230 balls, with Joe Root contributing 61 and Dawid Malan 39.
Joe Root sways under a Pat Cummins short ball, whipping his head out of the way. That'll be the 100 partnership too as Root pulls a single away. They've done a fine job in settling England down from a bit of a dodgy position, but both of them have to go on and make it to three figures.
