Bairstow is hit on the pads! Huge appeal from Australia. Given not out. But Steve Smith sends it upstairs!

Looked to be going down leg...

No nightwatchman for England - Jonny Bairstow is the new man in.

And Starc sends down a ropey wide one first up that Bairstow can comfortably leave.

Australia have got exactly what they were after. It was an impeccable catch to hold on to that. Marsh dived very athletically to his right.

Root has clipped it straight to square leg. He has to go. He looks distraught.

Say it ain't so, Joe. The England skipper is out just before the close of day one.

It's an ugly dismissal too - Starc bowling full with the new ball and Root clipping it in the air towards square leg, where Mitchell Marsh takes a fine diving catch to his right.

Root sinks to his knees in livid disbelief at what he's done. Australia jubilant. Once again Root fails to convert a fine start into a century.

That was a beautiful delivery from Starc. How that's got past leg stump, I'll never know.

  7. Eng 228-3published at 80.2 overs

Dearie me. How is Joe Root not out here? Starc responds to that first boundary with a late-swinging full one. Root jabs his bat down, and edges it past his stumps. How did that not hit?

  8. new ball

Mitchell Starc, despite his discomfort, will take the new ball as Australia do opt to bowl the last few overs of the day with it.

Here's the first ball...oh lovely. Joe Root plays a sumptuous straight drive down the ground for four.

  9. Eng 220-3published at 80 overs

Hazlewood to bowl the final over before the new ball is available.

Malan swivels it away to square leg. Ouch. Cameron Bancroft jams his knee into the ground as he gives chase, but fortunately doesn't do himself any damage, as Malan picks up two.

That's the second Australian to plug their knee into the soft SCG outfield after Usman Khawaja earlier - he went off the field for a while but was able to return soon after.

If you aren't spotting many England flags, it's because there aren't too many places to hang them. Security and stewards get antsy when they cover advertising boards. Travelling fans are forced to get creative.

Starc is gripping that left foot. He looks in a degree of trouble at the moment.

  12. Eng 218-3published at 79 overs

    Root 75, Malan 53

Starc over-pitches and Root drives through the covers for two. That'll do for the over as Root defends most and can't pierce the infield with a drive off the last.

Walking my border collies Swann and Trott in Battersea Park. Pitch black and hosing down. You're lighting up my walk. Love the extra hour.

Five overs remaining in the day

Hazlewood's first ball is too straight to Root and the captain tucks it away for a single.

Better to Malan, but the Middlesex man is able calmly defend.

Starc spent most of that over stretching his legs. He looks a bit sore but is going to continue.

Another well-timed clip from Malan off his pads to add another two to the total.

Starc is grimacing out there. This one final burst could be one too many for the day.

    Eng 213-3

And there it is, Dawid Malan reaches his fifth fifty in 10 Tests with a clip into leg for another couple.

It's been another gritty effort from the number five, who was dropped by Aussie skipper Steve Smith on 34. That wasn't the only chance he's offered up - he could've also been run out after a mix-up with Joe Root.

But he's played some deft shots and cracking cover drives in this knock, ably supporting his captain.
