The players are taking drinks while Khawaja receives some treatment. It looked as though he'd jarred his left knee as he slid to field the ball.

Oh! Usman Khawaja's done himself a mischief. He goes tumbling down at fine leg cut to cut off a drive from Dawid Malan, and his knee sticks in the turf. His foot twisted around horribly but it's his left knee that took the brunt of the fall.

Khawaja's limping as he hoists himself back onto his feet and Pat Cummins signals for the physio. That looked horrid.

One of Dawid Malan's main strengths is that if Australia go to the short stuff, he's got an attacking option. This is a risky strategy from Australia - it could get Malan out, but it could also allow him to get away.

    Hazlewood 14-2-39-1

Four for Dawid Malan! Short from Josh Hazlewood but not short enough, and Malan can swing and roll his wrists to pull the ball for four. Hazlewood's face was a picture - he knew that was the wrong delivery the second it came out of his hand.

Short again from Hazlewood and Malan plays the same shot, but sub fielder Peter Handscomb nips round to keep it to two.

I would have made Stuart Broad captain, even if it wasn't a long-term appointment. If it doesn't detract or makes your team better to make your best player captain, then fine.

But making Joe Root captain has detracted from the team because it hasn't allowed Joe to just be the cheeky chappy who bats.

Joe Root bunts the ball through mid-wicket for a single, before Nathan Lyon turns and pleads for an lbw against Dawid Malan. He's outside the line and I think he's hit it, too, but why not have a yelp? Malan ignores the noise around the bat and works a single away.

A change in bowling - Nathan Lyon replaces Mitch Starc.

    Root 40, Malan 17

That's four! Another fine touch from Joe Root, opening the face of the bat and gliding the ball past gully and away to the boundary. A whirl of the wrists brings another single to the England captain.

Ooft. Dawid Malan cracks away a cover drive that looks destined for the boundary before Nathan Lyon, moving and twisting to his left, cuts off the ball to deny him.

Is Liam Gallagher a cricket fan? I would love to hear him do a stint on TMS.

Liam Gallagher is playing at the Horden Pavilion - almost next door to the SCG - tonight. I haven't spotted him at the cricket, but I reckon a fair few Barmies will be at the gig.

A run for Dawid Malan! Short and trailing down the leg side from Mitch Starc, and Malan gets enough on it to help it for a single.

Joe Root then plays a weird sort of shot, shaping to pull before realising he's not in the right position. He thuds it, tennis forehand style, through the cover fielder for another couple. Malan then returns to blocking.

    Root 32, Malan 16

A lovely little push from Joe Root, driving the ball back through Josh Hazlewood's feet, brings him a couple first up. Oh, and that's four! Sterling work from Root as he leans back and cuts to the third man boundary.

An extravagant drive doesn't go quite so well for Root, the ball spooning up off an inside edge, before he picks up another easy two with a tickle off his hip.

We've had eight overs and eight runs in this session so far, which is numerically pleasing.

    Anyway, here's Josh Hazlewood.

  16. Eng 130-3published at 50 overs

A couple of nice drives from Dawid Malan but they all end up in the hands of a fielder, and Malan can't get himself away. He's looking a touch frustrated out there, not quite timing his shots as Mitch Starc targets his pads.

Starc, still not bowling at full tilt, wipes his brow and gets one to nip back in to Malan, but Malan wisely shoulders arms. Maiden.

Stoneman, Vince and Malan have not looked out of place in Test cricket. But Stoneman and Vince have not done it for long enough. Stoneman looked good today, did most of the hard work, then got out.

    Malan 16, Root 23

Pat Cummins mixes up his lengths, going full before crashing down a short ball that Root, wisely, ducks. A little push off the pads allows Root to nab a quick single, which gets Cummins chuntering to himself, before Dawid Malan has an uncontrolled swipe at a short ball.

There's plenty of pink on show inside the SCG today in support of the McGrath Foundation. Even the police horses have joined in with the colour scheme.

Shot! Joe Root plonks his foot forward and drives Mitch Starc away for four. Full and wide from Starc, and Root cashed in.

Starc goes short in response and Root takes it on, rolling his wrists to pull a single, before Malan ignores another very wide delivery.
