Australia are going for the bore 'em out tactic. Pat Cummins is giving nothing away, shaping the ball back in to Dawid Malan, who defends rather edgily. Cummins stares at him in disbelief as a delivery just skims over the stumps, but Malan keeps his hands and his bat out of the way.

Another maiden. We've had one run since tea.

I'm aware this is tempting fate, but Mitch Starc isn't at his quickest today. Most deliveries are in the early to mid-80s. He squares Joe Root up, though, Root's head and body toppling over to one side.

Root straightens himself up and defends, loudly shouting "no!" after every delivery. Starc huffs and whizzes his way through yet another maiden.

When fit, James Pattinson is the best bowler in the world. The problem is he is currently having to have his back remodelled in New Zealand.

A bouncer from Pat Cummins, bending his back, and Dawid Malan drops to one knee and whips his head out of the way. Tim Paine did really well to fly to his right and get hold of that.

Another short ball from Cummins with a bit of swing as the ball slides across Malan's body, but the England batsman ignores it.

Aosta Valley, Italy! About to get up, make some brekkie and hit the ski slopes of Courmayeur. Nothing like waking up and seeing England three wickets down. OK, maybe 6 wickets down could be better!

Beautiful blue sky above the SCG now as Joe Root tonks a delivery off his hip towards Mitch Marsh who sprawls and misses the ball. He recovers enough to claw it back and keep Root on strike.

Root tucks himself in behind the ball and pats away the rest of Starc's over. Maiden.

It'll be Mitch Starc to get things going from the other end, with Joe Root in his sights.

There are runs out there, but they are looking for that one major score to play around - like Cook did in Melbourne.

Nice and tidy from Pat Cummins first up, and he's so close to dismissing Joe Root! Root thuds a straight drive back at him, Cummins gets down low and the ball bounces inches in front of his fingertips.

Root readjusts, pushing into the covers to nab a single, before Dawid Malan stoically defends.

Darren Lehmann was spending 300 days away from home so Australia now allow him to miss tours. They see that as an opportunity to build up the next guy on those tours - currently it's Justin Langer.

I would not be surprised to see Trevor Bayliss start to do the same thing for England.

Following from the US. Went to New Orleans for Christmas to get some sun and they had freak sub zero temps. Decided to head to Miami for a few days before heading back to work in a brutally icy NYC. Miami is cold, wet and too windy to go outside. At least there's cricket on. Hope the lads' form can warm the cockles.

England have no team spirit issues on this tour - they are all trying their hardest. But they are just not good enough to beat the Aussies in Australia unless they are playing to their absolute best.
