    Cheers, Jack. A sterling effort.

Anyway. It's all been a bit England-y this morning. Get themselves into a decent position, and then get themselves out of it.

These three-hour sessions ain't half knackering. I'm off for a while and will hand you over to Amy Lofthouse.

    Catch you later.

What to make of that session? A grimly familiar tale for England's top order, who all got in and looked to be in control, only to all be out before 100 runs were up.

Mark Stoneman was positive but again looked uncertain to the short ball, edging a decent Pat Cummins delivery behind to Tim Paine.

James Vince then did the James Vince - bat with panache for 25 runs, only to flash at a wide one and nick off. The ball from Cummins deserved to be hit - it's just the execution that was lacking and will result in more question over Vince's place in this side.

And then Alastair Cook, who brought out all his trademark strokes after a cagey start, then played across one from the impressive Josh Hazlewood - with Steve Smith gambling correctly the ball had pitched in line. Just.

Fine margins but that's Australia's session, giving how little there seemed to be for the fast bowlers off this SCG pitch.

  4. Tea - Eng 122-3published at 42 overs

    Root 16, Malan 16

Root flicks off his pads for a single.

Shot! Malan still looking to be positive, despite tea being imminent, punishing Lyon for an over-pitched delivery with a consummate drive to the fence.

Last ball of the session - Malan easily nudges it back to the bowler. And this pair do indeed see England through to tea without further damage. The tourists will feel they should be in a better position on this pitch though.

A brief pause as Cameron Bancroft collects a helmet to come in at short leg for Joe Root facing Josh Hazlewood. Root plays the first back-of-a-length ball afterwards well through, dropping it away harmlessly.

Root pulls away backwards of square for one. A short leg in also in place for Malan, who defends back to the bowler. A couple of leaves to finish.

  8. Eng 116-3published at 40 overs

    Root 14, Malan 12

Malan drives Lyon through the covers but can only pick up one as Khawaja makes a decent diving stop.

Root rocks back and drops it with soft hands down towards third man for a single. England have played Lyon well so far, but he's looked dangerous with the odd one that bites and turns.

  11. Eng 114-3published at 39 overs

Hazlewood serves up probably his worst ball of the day, and Root batters the long hop through the covers for three, with Lyon pulling it in inside the rope.

Malan then works it through mid-wicket for a couple before swaying away from a well-directed bouncer. The Middlesex man has played the short ball well this series.

Full one to finish and Malan tucks off his pads for one.

  12. Eng 108-3published at 38 overs

Yikes. Nathan Lyon turns it from middle and off past the outside edge of Dawid Malan's bat and just past off stump. England may find some solace in having played two spinners looking at that ball, but that's small comfort right now.

Malan then tries to sweep, but the ball creeps under the bat. Finally Malan does get it away, driving square for a couple.

  13. Eng 106-3published at 37 overs

    Root 10, Malan 6

Hazlewood is nagging away around off stump and Root can't get him away. The Aussie quick then bangs one in and Root goes at it - a streaky top edge landing fine of the man back for that shot and bouncing over the boundary. Not very convincing that but four for it.

Another bumper and this time Root elects to duck under it.

England will always be an up and down side until they become a better, more solid batting side. You can't win Test matches unless you bat better and put decent totals on the board.

    Hazlewood 8-2-9-1

Hazlewood looking to target Root's pads to remove in the same way as his predecessor as captain. An inside edge from Root with an angled bat will ensure Hazlewood keeps trying that.

Root can't get it away and that's another maiden for the impressive Hazlewood.

There's definitely turn. It always does in Sydney. I've never known one not turn.
