  1. Aus 207-2published at 71 overs

    Trail by 139

Usman Khawaja comes down the pitch to Moeen and looks to knock Moeen back down the ground, but he can't time the shot properly and the inside edge balloons just short of the waiting fielder. Joe Root, standing at slip, mimes the shot to Moeen as he walks back to his mark.

Khawaja, perhaps wisely, stays a bit more circumspect for the rest of the over, and plays out a maiden.

Philip Carr: Steve Smith moving across and defending a ball about 5 miles outside off stump is simply ridiculous but also weirdly majestic.

  3. Aus 207-2published at 70 overs

    Smith 56, Khawaja 93

Usman Khawaja keeps up his steady accumulation with a little tickle off his legs. Steve Smith continues his wandering across his stumps, hoicking his bat high above his head before nabbing a single from the final ball of James Anderson's over.

  5. Aus 204-2published at 69 overs

    Smith 54, Khawaja 92

Shot! That's too full from Moeen and Steve Smith lets his arms fly, stretching forward and cracking him through the covers. Mason Crane scampers after the ball like an excitable puppy, but can only slide it, and himself, into the boundary rope.

  7. 50 runs

50 for Smithpublished at 68.2 overs

Death, taxes, a Steve Smith half-century. All inevitable.

Smith raises his bat to the SCG crowd as he works Moeen off his legs to bring up his half-century. It's his fifth of the series, and he's made four of them into centuries.

Ooh. It'll be Moeen to bowl the second over of the day. He said earlier that he though he was bowling as well in this Test as he has all tour.

  10. Aus 196-2published at 68 overs

    Trail by 150

Steve Smith is stepping so far across that he's showing all three stumps to James Anderson, who is coming around the wicket to him. It's not pretty but man, is it effective.

Runs! Smith milks a couple off his hip before tapping a simple single away. Usman Khawaja, nine runs away from his sixth Test century, lets the rest of the over fly past him.

  11. Aus 193-2published at 67.1 overs

Short, wide, pushed across the batsman, and Steve Smith leaves it well alone.

    Let's play!

Right, here we go. England make their way on to the field, followed by Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith. Khawaja isn't looking quite as chill as he normally does.

By the looks of things, it'll be James Anderson to open the bowling today.

Never let it be said that our commentators aren't fashionable. A sterling effort for pink day, particularly from fashion expert Dan Norcross.

It feels like not only the SCG, but the whole of Sydney has turned pink. Last night, a pub was offering pink food colouring to drop into your pint. No change in taste, but quite novel. This morning, at Central Station, the guy who yesterday was flogging green and gold caps for $5 has pink hats for $10. I've gone for a pink T-shirt. Without some of that colour, it would be like going to a fancy dress party in your civvies.

It's Jane McGrath day at the SCG!

Fans and pundits alike come dressed in pink for the third day's play in support of the McGrath Foundation. The charity raises awareness about breast cancer and funds for care nurses to help support families affected by the disease.

  16. 'A lot of players have let the team down'published at 23:23 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

England all-rounder Moeen Ali on TMS: "A lot of players have let the team down, especially in the first three games.

"As a team, we've got a point to prove. We've competed in all the games but we've ended up getting beat by a big margin. It's very frustrating and that's tough to take.

"When you don't win the first game, it's always tough. It's not easy to win away."

We've finally found one thing Steve Smith can't do - dance.

  18. 'There are no good dancers'published at 23:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon on ABC: "We're pretty happy with where we stand at he moment. Hopefully Uzzie and Smithy can build on that stand this morning.

"The way Nathan Crane was spinning it last night, and even Moeen Ali, I was rubbing my hands together and looking forward to the second dig."

On Australia's celebrations at the end of the series: "There are no good dancers so I don't think anyone will be dancing down the street. There will be a few beers to be had - we're pretty happy."

  19. 'Ballerina-esque' Crane has first Test bowlpublished at 23:19 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

Mason Crane had his first bowl in Test cricket yesterday, and it was an energetic start from the young leg-spinner.

There was the odd bad ball, as there always will be by a young leggie plying his trade, but there was some decent stuff too.

He had Usman Khawaja looking edgy for a while, and another edge from Steve Smith dropped just short of Joe Root at slip.

"Mason has got the right style of energy and he gets plenty of revolutions on the ball," Michael Vaughan said yesterday.

"He didn't look fazed. He's not the kind of bowler you'd see playing every single Test match but we've seen enough today to know that, if England work well with him, there's things to be worked on over the next few years."

  20. 'We can't find a way to get Smith out'published at 23:17 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2018

England all-rounder Moeen Ali on TMS: "Normally we would say we were in a dcent position, but with Steve Smith in there it's hard to tell. We can't really find a way to get him out.

"With any batter, I feel there is somewhere I can bowl. With the way he's playing, there doesn't seem to be a way you can bowl at him. You have to hope he makes a mistake or someone bowls a jaffa.

"I go out and try and play the best I can every day. It's just a game of cricket - there's not much pressure at all."
