  1. What you've missedpublished at 06:08 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2018

Welcome if you're starting your weekend very early. You may be surprised to see that Steve Smith isn't still batting.

He looked on course for a fourth ton in the series but miscued a drive back to Moeen Ali, who took a fine caught and bowled chance to remove the skipper on 83.

At the other end, Usman Khawaja batted beautifully - duly reaching his sixth Test century. He would have been out lbw to Mason Crane before lunch - but when England reviewed, it was judged to have been a no ball. A tight call that has caused some controversy and denied Crane his first Test wicket at the time.

Khawaja continued past 150, ably supported by Shaun Marsh, as Australia moved past England's total to reach 365-3 at tea, a lead of 19.

Crane did finally get his man though - spinning it through Khawaja as he danced down the wicket, with Jonny Bairstow completing the stumping to dismiss the number three for a fantastic 171.

Since then, the Marsh brothers Shaun and Mitchell have extended Australia's lead...

Much calmer at the other end as Shaun Marsh milks a single, before Mason Crane pulls out of his run up twice. The Sydney crowd are having none of it.

And that'll be four. Another carving shot from Mitch Marsh, beating the diving fielder at cover and racing away to the ropes.

This is the first fifty partnership between the Marsh brothers in Tests. It took 90 balls, with four 4s and two 6s.

  4. Aus 432-4published at 146 overs

    M Marsh 40, S Marsh 74

That'll be four more for Mitch Marsh - too full from Moeen and Mitch Marsh creams it through the covers with a swish of the bat.

Marsh then, in a bit of anti-climax, blocks the final ball back to Moeen. Just the 16 runs from that over.

Mitchell Marsh got right to the pitch of the ball - almost too close but he then leaned back and got his bottom hand under it. Tremendous strike.

Here's Moeen - and there goes Moeen! Dearie me, that's an almighty hit from Mitch Marsh.

He comes down the pitch and just throws his bat so, so quickly at the ball. The ball was nowhere near the middle of the bat, and yet it's still gone flying into the crowd.

And again! He's not got all of that, either, but he's hit it flat. Ooft.

  7. Aus 416-4published at 145 overs

    Lead by 70

Umpire Dharmasena calls Joe Root over for a chat as Stuart Broad, fielding at mid-on, deliberately throws the ball in on the bounce. Mason Crane gets driven by Shaun Marsh but aside from that, it's a tidy over.

As an aside, I wonder how Adil Rashid feels, seeing all this praise for Crane. 30 wickets in seven Tests in 2016, and that's been his lot.

  8. Aus 412-4published at 144 overs

    S Marsh 71, M Marsh 23

Stuart Broad's trying all his short ball tricks here. Shaun Marsh rolls his wrists on the first one he receives, thwacking the ball away for one, before Mitch Marsh ducks and weaves out of the way of the next.

Full from Broad, trying to wrong-foot Marsh, but he's equal to it. He then finally gets the attention of the substitute fielder, who have been ignoring him in favour of chatting to Darren Lehmann, to get some new gloves brought out.

Oh! Super close again from Mason Crane as he turns one in to Shaun Marsh, who tries to work the ball back over his head and ends up sending a leading edge down to mid-on. Stuart Broad, realising it's going to drop short, rather ambles around to pick it up.

Marsh comes down the wicket to the next ball and ends up with his feet in a tangle. More good stuff from Crane.

Mason Crane has just said he thinks it has pitched outside leg. It's a good sign he got that right.

  11. Aus 410-4published at 142.3 overs

A big lbw shout first up for Mason Crane! Mitch Marsh moves back into his crease and attempts to swish forward, but he misses. He's been struck right in front of the stumps there but Crane doesn't ask for the review. And rightly so - that's pitching outside leg.

The googly comes Shaun Marsh's way and he reaches for it, playing it awkwardly, but there's enough bat on it to get a single, before Mitch Marsh hustles the ball over short leg's head.

Mason Crane has had to bowl a lot to left-handers in this innings. Now he's bowling to a right-hander, he's looking really threatening.

  13. Aus 405-4published at 142 overs

    Lead by 59

Shaun Marsh brings up Australia's 400 as he swivels and pulls a Stuart Broad short ball away. Mitch Marsh then adds another boundary but it's not convincing, Marsh managing to drop his bat down on a delivery that, had he missed, would have been crashing into his back pad.

The last 20 minutes have been my most exciting of the whole tour because you're seeing a 20-year-old leg-spinner rip it past the outside edge of the right-hander's bat. It's been terrific to watch.

  15. Aus 399-4published at 141 overs

Mitch Marsh works a single off his hip from Crane's first ball, before he gets one to jump up at Shaun Marsh. Short leg takes a neat catch, but there was no bat on that, Marsh ending up whirling his bat at nothing.

Another exchanging of singles before Mitch Marsh, somehow, manages to avoid being bowled by an absolute peach. And it's followed up by back to back boundaries, Mitch Marsh throwing everything but the kitchen sink into an almighty pull shot.

Graham Smith: Looks like winning the toss might not stop England having to bat last on this pitch.

Drinks have been and gone out in the middle at the SCG. There are about 17 overs left today.

Mason Crane will continue his lengthy spell.

When you don't get someone early then the batsman stops pushing at it hard and playing circumspect shots. Mitchell Marsh played and missed the first few but has looked better since.

  19. Aus 389-4published at 140 overs

Stuart Broad gets one to nip back in to Shaun Marsh, who leaves, before a flick off the pads adds another single to Australia's lead.

Broad bends his back to send down a short ball and Mitch Marsh is so tempted to have a swing at it, but he refrains. He takes on the next one but makes a mess of it, throwing himself through the pull shot early and toe-ending the ball past slip.

It's been a funny old tour. England have stuck at it despite being clearly the worse team in four out of the five Tests.
