I think that review was encouraged by Joe Root more than Dawid Malan - Malan suspected he was gone.

17 of Nathan Lyon's 19 wickets in this series have been left-handers.
As it was umpire's call, England keep their review. Which is something, I suppose.
Jonny Bairstow is the next man in.

That skidded on a bit from Lyon - Malan was slightly late on it.
Malan lbw Lyon 5 (Eng 68-4)
Umpire's call - Malan has to go!
Dawid Malan looked done for as soon as he shuffled back to the delivery. He couldn't jab bat down on it in time, and it just looked out. That's another one for Lyon, and Malan trudges slowly off the field.
There's no bat on that - it's struck him on the back leg, top of the pad...

He did get bat on it, but when? Bat-pad or pad-bat?
Dawid Malan has been given out lbw!
The umpire took a long time to decide. Malan wants a look...
Still 19 overs left in the day. Nathan Lyon's about to fire through one of them.

He was trapped on the back foot and Starc liked it. I wonder if Root got some bat on it?

It's short, Joe Root ducks it fairly awkwardly, but he avoids getting hit. He's copped a few bruises this series, Root. The strike on the grille back in Brisbane sticks in my mind.
Oh! That's so close! Starc strikes Root on the back leg, everyone goes up but the umpire doesn't so much as flicker. Starc turns to Smith and mouths "height" and Smith avoids using a review. He's right to, as well - it's bouncing over the stumps.

For some reason, there are four security guards, one on each corner of the square, while Root is being treated. If they are there to stop intruders, they needn't bother. No one is going on to the pitch in this heat.
Right, what's Starc going to do - yorker or bouncer?
Joe Root has his glove balancing on three fingers but he's holding one out of the way at an awkward angle. He's had a couple of pain killers but I really don't like the look of that finger.
He has a very ginger practice tap of the bat and mimes a drive. He's going to carry on.

The physio is smiling. Joe Root isn't.
Starc goes for the yorker but it's wide and Root jams his bat down on it.
A short one next up but Root gets on top of it to hit the pull shot down. Ouch, that's actually whacked Root on the glove.
The England captain drops his bat and the physio is coming out onto the field.

Malan has been a positive on this tour. He has shown some grit and determination and he has adapted his game from the T20 he plays domestically.
Malan 5, Root 34
Full from Nathan Lyon first up, and Joe Root turns his wrists to whip away a couple through mid-wicket. Another single is turned past Cameron Bancroft's toes.
Another ball lands in those footholes and it spins and spits, but Dawid Malan draws his bat well out of the way and watches it safely into Tim Paine's gloves.

I like Stoneman but he should be dropped, right? You get the feeling he will get another go in NZ but he has done no more than poor Michael Carberry 4 years ago...
