Personally, I think Stoneman's worth sticking with. I think he's not quite been the same since he was struck at Perth, but there's two months before the Test series in New Zealand starts and he's got the game to deal with a swinging ball.
As for James Vince, I think his time in the Test arena is done.

There's no guarantee England will stick with Mark Stoneman. Since Perth, he has struggled.
Root 31, Malan 5
Another slower ball from Mitch Starc, a touch wider this time, and Joe Root blocks it into the covers. That's down the leg side, the ball trailing across Root, and Starc has another suspicious look at the foot marks.
Root clips nicely off his pads - not too dissimilar to the way he fell in the first innings - but this time it's all along the ground. A little punch off the back foot adds a couple to England's total.

Ben Thapa: Right now would be a great time for Haseeb Hameed's agent to get him a short term club deal in New Zealand.
Dawid Malan crouches forward and turns Nathan Lyon through short leg, and he and Root communicate well to turn and jog a speedy two. Lyon's response is to rip one past Malan's outside edge, and Malan returns to blocking.

I'm losing faith in James Vince. But teams tend to over-emphasise the impact of dropping someone, which makes it harder for England to leave him out in New Zealand and look at someone else.
A firm jab from Dawid Malan brings him a single, while Mitch Starc gives the footmarks a filthy look. There's a bit of reverse swing there for the big Aussie quick, but Joe Root negotiates it well. Starc fires down a yorker to end the over and Root gets his toes out of the way.

Only four bowlers - Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc - have taken wickets for Australia in this series.
If it stays that way, it will be the first time in Test match history that a team has gone through a five-match series with only four bowlers taking wickets.

Dawid Malan turns Nathan Lyon around the corner to steal a single, before Joe Root bunts a loopy delivery through the covers for a couple. And again! That's good work from Root, just keeping the strike ticking over.
Jonny Bairstow is pacing around outside the England dressing room, tapping his bat on the floor.

It feels like England are playing for pride out there.
Root 20, Malan 1
Extra zip there for Mitch Starc as he gets a delivery to rise up on Joe Root, but Root meets the ball with the full face of the bat. He offers Starc a grin afterwards, which isn't returned.
Ooh. Starc trise a slower ball bouncer, the ball coming down at 67mph, and Root doesn't read it. He throws a pull at it but he's through the shot before the ball's got to him, and he ends up getting a rap on the shoulder. A yorker rounds off a maiden over.

Another plus on this tour - and there haven’t been many - has been the energy and effervescence shown by Craig Overton and Tom Curran. I’m not saying they’re world-beaters, but they provided a lift.
A change for Australia. Mitch Starc is on for a blast.

Joe Root defends as Nathan Lyon tries to spin the ball into his pads, before he nudges a single away. Dawid Malan sees off the final ball of the over in slightly edgy fashion.
Up in the England dressing room and Mark Stoneman is having a good old chat with Mark Ramprakash. Alastair Cook, sat next to them, is staring off into the distance.
The drinks are off the field, which means it's time for Nathan Lyon to have a bowl.

Matt Roberts: Look, people may criticise James Vince, but what they don’t understand is that every England team is obligated, by the Queen, to have a player with a glorious cover drive who will always flatter to deceive.
27 overs left in the day. 27 overs for England to try and see out and somehow force this game into tomorrow.

Since Trevor Bayliss has come in, the one-day team has improved, but they bring the one-day mindset to the Test arena. They are always talking about positive, attacking cricket, and they forget Test matches last five days.
