Ugh. That's too good from Pat Cummins, getting the ball to lift off the pitch, and it somehow drifts past Joe Root's outside edge as he looks to drive the ball. Cummins grins at Root and sends down a similar delivery, but the eNgland captain connects enough to work a single.

Now there's a shout for lbw against Dawid Malan but it's high, the ball trailing down leg, and Cummins' plea goes unanswered. Time for drinks.

You don't want to bowl too wide on this pitch if it's starting to turn. Lyon's first ball was a snorter and he's started as he means to go on. There's so much pace on the ball - there's no time to come down the pitch to him.

  3. Eng 46-3published at 24 overs

There are an awful lot of pink faces in the crowd, particularly among the England contingent. Get some suncream on, folks.

Dawid Malan gets off the mark from the first ball of Nathan Lyon's over, before Joe Root pushes nicely into the covers for a single. That's wide from Lyon but it's turning in to Malan, and he slaps it away rather nervously.

At the end of the series, we're going to be looking at ifs, buts and maybes, but the gulf between the sides has been massive.

    Root 15, Malan 0

That Vince dismissal has irked me and yet not surprised me in the slightest. I'll be seeing him nicking behind in my sleep.

Hello, that's a good bouncer from Pat Cummins, rising up on Joe Root, and Root doesn't play it particularly well. He just about gets his hands out of the way. He ducks the final ball of the over much more convincingly.

Lee Fergusson: This could be all over very soon at this rate but at least it will put England out of their misery in this Test series.

The thing with James Vince is, you so want him to be better than he is. Those cover drives, the pull shots are lovely to watch. But there's no substance to it. It's just the same sort of dismissal over and over and it is utterly infuriating.

Joe Root works a single before Nathan Lyon greets Dawid Malan by spinning one right past his outside edge. It's tense out there.

You can make two videos of James Vince. On one, there are glorious shots and he looks like a player made for Test cricket. On the other, his dismissals make it clear there is something wrong with his mindset.

I strongly suspect that James Vince won't be on the plane to New Zealand in March. A familiar end to a familiar innings.

Dawid Malan is the new man in, but he's at the opposite end as Joe Root faces Nathan Lyon.

That dismissal is horribly familiar, I have to say.

  11. wicket

    Vince c Smith b Cummins 18 (Eng 43-3)

Guess how James Vince has got out.

That was horribly inevitable. Pat Cummins had the measure of him in that over, and then he just spears a delivery a touch shorter. Vince chases it, the ball takes the outside edge and Steve Smith juggles his first attempt at slip, before clinging on at the second time of asking. Dearie me.

An edge from James Vince, but it's safe! These are nervy times for England's number three. He's caught pushing once again at Pat Cummins, not committed to the shot, and the ball careers off the outside edge towards Steve Smith at slip. He dives, but the ball bounces in front of him.

England have done some of the dumbest things on record on this tour, encapsulated by Jonny Bairstow refusing a nightwatchman in this Test.

What I've mostly learnt from this series is that I'd be a terrible umpire because, looking at that live, it looked like he'd hit it. Vince was pushing away from his body, playing against the spin.

Anyway, Vince survives, and his reward is to face an over from Pat Cummins.

  15. Not outpublished at 04:58 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2018

Not out! The noise the umpire heard was indeed bat hitting ground.

James Vince knew, as well. Not a second's hesitation in calling for the review.

I don't think there's any bat. Nowhere near it.

Instantly Vince has reviewed. My feeling is that he hasn't hit it.

  19. England reviewpublished at 04:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2018

James Vince has been given out! Caught behind off Nathan Lyon!

Vince doesn't agree though. He's reviewed it straight away.

There's a career to be batted for, in a sense, for James Vince. If he scores a big hundred here, it will make a huge difference.
