Pat Cummins surprises James Vince with a slower ball first up, that he awkwardly pushes at. Oh, and that's a pearler! The ball hurries off the pitch and Vince, playing that maddening little swish that we've seen a lot of on this tour, ends up swiping at fresh air.

Vince wanders off to short leg to have a brief consultation with himself, before he leaves the rest of the over well alone.

Vince and Root are the best batsmen for these conditions, with the ball spinning into them. It is going to be much harder for the left-handers to come.

Turn from Nathan Lyon, as he fizzes a tidy over down to James Vince, but Vince thrusts his legs forward and keeps the ball away from his stumps. Vince shoulders arms and watches a ball spin just past his leg stump. I'm not entirely sure Vince expected that to fizz as much as it did.

There's a chap on the second tier of the stand taunting the Barmy Army, who are barracking from below. He needs to be careful not to fall off - he'll be torn limb from limb.

James Vince works the first, shortish sort of ball that comes his way before Joe Root defends the rest of the over.

When was the last time you remember England blocking their way to a Test draw? I think it was in New Zealand in 2013, when Matt Prior and Stuart Broad blocked, blocked and blocked some more.

A change for Australia - here's Pat Cummins.

There are quite a few seasoned cricketers, including Glenn McGrath, who are saying they have not seen cricket played in hotter conditions than in this Test.

  8. Eng 35-2published at 16 overs

    Vince 13, Root 11

Oh, is that a chance! Joe Root pushes forward to Nathan Lyon and the ball catches the outside edge but it's just, tantalisingly short of Steve Smith at slip. Smith does a full superman dive in an attempt to grab but he ends up clutching at the turf.

Nervy times, but England negotiate another Lyon over.

There is a debate to be had about our overall structure in England, and whether it allows us to produce the right sort of cricketer to play out here. There's no great incentive for spinners and fast bowlers in red ball cricket for much of the English season, because of the way it is structured.

James Vince plays one of his trademark, sumptuous cover drives, and England fans everywhere instantly panic. He's hit that nicely, though, and he and Joe Root scamper three as David Warner chases it down.

Joe Root sees the rest of the over out with a pleasingly straight bat.

There is definite turn for Nathan Lyon but it is being exacerbated by drift in to the right-hander. The danger areas for Joe Root, who will play with the spin, are short leg and leg slip.

My colleague is currently going through the TV guide, working out what we could watch instead of this. Secrets Of the National Trust with Alan Titchmarsh is currently looking very appealing. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Nathan Lyon works his way through a tidy over, with Joe Root hustling him away for a single before James Vince blocks.

Here's Nathan Lyon, with three men around the bat and two right-handers to have a twirl at.

Cook got himself out today. The ball that got him out, he played on the back foot, but it was the exact same delivery as the one before, which he'd negated by playing on the front foot.

A little push down the ground brings James Vince a couple, before Josh Hazlewood spears the ball in fuller. He strikes Vince on the pad but it's too leg side, and Hazlewood abandons his appeal.

Vince rounds off the over by playing all around a straight ball, but he manages to get enough bat on it to keep it off his stumps.

It'll be Josh Hazlewood to start us off after tea, with James Vince in his sights.

Cheers, Jack. Right, folks. The players are out in the middle. There's 40 overs left in the day.

Can England see the evening out?

Will this be over tonight? Will England dig deep?

I'll hand you over to Amy Lofthouse to find out.

There's always an automatic hue and cry after an Ashes loss. I don't advocate change for change's sake.

Vince and Root will resume with England on 25-2, still trailing by 278 runs.

Not that the runs matter too much right now - England just need to bat time.

That said, I really can't see England drawing this, even if Vince and Root are still there at the close.

England have struggled to bat out for a draw in recent years.
