  1. Lunch - Eng 144-5published at 75 overs

    Root 58, Bairstow 38

Nice! Joe Root swings and pulls Josh Hazlewood down, past Cameron Bancroft, and finds it within himself to run two.

The next delivery from Hazlewood nips back in, surprising Root, who whips his hand off the bat, before he sees away the final delivery of the over.

    That will be lunch.

Oh! Marsh's first ball comes back in to Jonny Bairstow and just nips over his stumps. It doesn't get very high, and it's certainly not fast, but it's very similar to the delivery that did for Marsh himself in Australia's innings.

Another delivery sneaks through to Tim Paine at about big toe height, before another one bounces out of nowhere and Paine, now standing up, takes the ball at shoulder height. He cops a blow on his thumb, too, for good measure.

Nathan Lyon, with just under 10 minutes to go until lunch, is going to take a breather. Here's Mitch Marsh.

Joe Root, somehow, sees off six tidy balls from Josh Hazlewood.

Right, folks, can you help our man in Australia, Stephan Shemilt, out?

  7. Eng 142-5published at 72 overs

    Bairstow 38, Root 56

That's a lovely shot from Joe Root, picking up on some width from Nathan Lyon and crashing him through the covers. A decent bit of fielding from Pat Cummins saves a boundary, but Root somehow still finds it within him to run three.

He spends the rest of the over at the non striker's end, leaning on his bat. He's not a well man.

Joe Root is almost bent over double at the non striker's end, but he's so determined to keep moving. He wanders up the wicket to do a bit of gardening. He really looks like he should be tucked up in bed somewhere.

Full from Hazlewood, and Jonny Bairstow flicks it off his toes and somehow persuades Root to run two. I say run. Meander is a better word.

I reckon - or at least, I hope - that the one-day series might give Moeen a chance to get his mojo back.

There is a case for not taking Moeen Ali to New Zealand. His body language is poor. He needs time off to rest and get his love of cricket back.

Jonny Bairstow makes sure he gets himself well outside his off stump to face Nathan Lyon. He turns successive deliveries through Cameron Bancroft, before Lyon has a hopeful appeal for lbw ignored by the umpire. Too high, methinks.

Tom Curran has not got the technique or experience to last a long time. His 39 in the first innings was skittish.

Joe Root looks like he's not well. I know that's an obvious thing to say but he's really fighting with himself. He's walking around quite gingerly, taking deep breaths between balls. It's impressive that he's continuing.

He negotiates his way through another Mitch Starc maiden.

Cameron Bancroft has had a checking over and thankfully, he seems to be okay. He's called for a new helmet.

He didn't so much as flinch when that struck him. Hard as nails. Root middled it straight at him. Short leg is a dreadful place to field.

That could have ended up caught and bowled - you can be caught off a fielder's helmet now.

Mitch Starc is going to come over the wicket to Joe Root, and it almost pays dividends straight away as Root throws a horrible pull at a short ball. He doesn't play that well at all.

Root pulls again - and he's hit Cameron Bancroft at short leg! Root's nailed that and it's hit Bancroft first in the grille and then the shoulder, knocking something off his helmet. Root instantly turns to Bancroft to check he's okay, completely ignoring the ball that's floating in the air. On comes the physio.
