  1. Eng 136-5published at 68 overs

    Bairstow 36, Root 52

There's not as much rough for Nathan Lyon to play with when he's bowling to the right-handers. Jonny Bairstow can smother the spin, before he takes a step back onto his stumps and hustles two runs through mid-wicket.

Nice use of the feet from Bairstow, but there's a fielder in place to cut off his drive.

Here are my four key moments in this Ashes:

    1. England were 264-4 at Brisbane on a flat deck but were all out for 302
    2. Australia were 209-7 in reply when James Anderson was taken off after only three overs with the new ball and Steve Smith and Pat Cummins got away from England
    3. England won the toss at Adelaide, elected to bowl but Anderson and Broad didn't use the new ball well. England should've drawn in Brisbane and won at Adelaide
    4. England were 368-4 at Perth, a pitch they should've been able to draw on - that collapse was an absolute killer
  3. Eng 134-5published at 67 overs

Down the leg side goes Mitch Starc and for a half a second, Jonny Baisrtow is tempted to have a glance at it. He changes his mind, though, and hauls his bat above his head to avoid that most embarrassing of dismissals - a leg side strangle.

A fine throw from Josh Hazlewood down at long leg, managing to knock the bails off, is the highlight of a fairly sedate over.

A couple of the Australians had something similar to Joe Root down in Melbourne but the heat and conditions here will have just compounded things.

  5. Eng 133-5published at 66 overs

So Root had a bug, rather than heat exhaustion. Although I imagine being out in the middle in baking temperatures wouldn't have done anything to help him fight off the effects. Pat Cummins was quite ill in Melbourne, too, if memory serves.

Jonny Bairstow plays tidily against Nathan Lyon, drilling a single into the covers to end the over.

  6. Root had gastroenteritispublished at 00:50 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

To confirm, Joe Root had a viral gastroenteritis bug. It has nothing to do with heat exhaustion from yesterday temperatures in Sydney.

I like this idea very much. Have the third Test at Scarbados.

As revenge for Sydney, can’t we schedule the next Ashes at home to be played at Old Trafford, Durham, Carlisle, John O’Groats and Lerwick?

  9. Eng 132-5published at 65 overs

    Root 52, Bairstow 32

A nice drive from Joe Root is to no avail as David Warner scampers around like an eager puppy. Root then calls for a drink after patting Starc's third ball back to him.

Into the pads goes Starc and Root works him away, but he can't quite find the single. Maiden.

A pan around the crowd shows that Root got a standing ovation for that half-century. A lovely touch.

Mitch Starc will continue to the England captain.

England are going to need everything Joe Root can conjure up here, but Jonny Bairstow is looking solid too.

Resilience from England's captain on the final day, even just to be out there.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Rootpublished at 63.5 overs

And that'll be 50 for Joe Root!

He steers Nathan Lyon around the corner and looks quite content to jog two, before Jonny Bairstow persuades him to run for the third. It's been an excellent effort from Root - he was superb yesterday and to come back out this morning after being in hospital is a real show of determination

  14. Eng 129-5published at 63.3 overs

Tossed up from Nathan Lyon and Joe Root leans into it, throwing his arms forward and carving the ball down the ground for a couple. Root goes for a sweep but doesn't time it, and ends up dragging the ball in to Cameron Bancroft's knee.

Lyon's response is another beauty that stays low and goes straight past Root's defensive shovel.

Here are all the batsmen dismissed by the same bowler seven times in a series:

    • Jack Siedle by Clarrie Grimmett (SA v Aus 1935/36)
    • Trevor Goddard by Brian Statham (SA v Eng 1960)
    • David Gower by Geoff Lawson (Eng v Aus 1989)
    • Michael Atherton by Glenn McGrath (Eng v Aus 1997)
    • Moeen Ali by Nathan Lyon (Eng v Aus 2017/18)
  16. Eng 127-5published at 63 overs

A single brings Joe Root on strike - and he clatters the ball for four! That was a little uppish from Root, reaching for a wide delivery, but it's pierced the field and raced away to the boundary.

That's Root's first boundary from his 130th ball. Easy to forget that he ran for all of his 42 runs yesterday.

Pat Cummins is going to take a breather - it'll be Mitch Starc to replace him.

So, Joe Root comes to the crease and earlier on the SCG was showing this. You couldn't make it up.

I can't quite make out what David Warner is saying, but I can hear him constantly chattering about something. Joe Root presses forward and pats away the rest of Lyon's deliveries.

Nathan Lyon has got Moeen Ali out seven times in this series - that's the fifth time a bowler has got the same batsman out seven times in one Test series.

The last time was Glenn McGrath getting Michael Atherton seven times in 1997.
