Root batted for 176 minutes yesterday - so a smidge under three hours - after spending all morning and a chunk of time after lunch in the field. England have spent two days in the field.
This was the temperature at lunch yesterday on a scorching day in Sydney: 57.5C. That's not a typo.

Root issue raises welfare questions for cricket. Sydney tennis had its heat policy in effect at 10am yesterday, half an hour before the cricket began. All they had at the Test was an extra drinks break per session.
There is an extreme heat policy at play in tennis after players suffered heatstroke and fainted at the 2014 Australian Open.
Rules were changed to ensure that, once temperatures reached 40C or above, play could be suspended at the end of the current set in each match.
At the Sydney International, which is being played at the same time as this Test, Kristina Mladenovic retired from her first-round match after suffering from heatstroke.
First things first.
England captain Joe Root is in hospital in Sydney with severe dehydration after spending almost all of yesterday out in the middle at the SCG.
Temperatures in the middle peaked at 57C as Sydney experienced its hottest day in 79 years.
It is uncertain whether Root will be fit to resume his innings.
Auckland, 2013.
That was the last time England batted out at fifth day to secure a draw.
Same again today? It seems unlikely...
