Here he is - a standing ovation in the members stand for Joe Root as he makes his way out to the middle.
He gets a very warm round of applause from the spectators in the ground as he wanders out to greet Jonny Bairstow.

Moeen is walking off and not even considering a challenge. Bairstow is going after to him to ask if he doesn't want to reconsider. But no.
Moeen lbw Lyon 13 (Eng 121-5)
Gone! Moeen falls to Nathan Lyon once again!
Oh, that's out. It goes straight on from Nathan Lyon, Moeen misses it and he's almost walking off before the umpire raises his finger. Jonny Bairstow actually shouts to Moeen to ask about the review, but Moeen shakes his head. He knew.

Jonny Bairstow has kept well enough to justify him carrying on with the gloves - it doesn't do his batting any harm. He would score his runs in equal measure with or without the gloves. If Ben Foakes is the next batsman off the rank, he's a good fielder and I'd rather he concentrated on his batting at five, with Bairstow at six.
Pat Cummins gets two balls at Moeen, and both of them are short. The second one stays low, though, hittong Moeen, but he's aware enough to call Jonny Bairstow through for a quick leg bye.
Bairstow nabs a single before Moeen, angling his bat, gets a thick edge that runs toawrds Steve Smith and clatters him on the shin. Smith, tumbling to the ground, tries to grab the ball but he can't prevent it running away to give Moeen his first boundary.

It's Josh Hazlewood's birthday today. The spectators at long leg sang for him. He celebrated by signing some autographs.
Two slips and a short leg in place for Moeen as he faces up to Nathan Lyon. They whizzed through a complication of Moeen's dismissals to Lyon earlier on - he was mostly caught out when he pushed forward, which is what Lyon's doing to him here.
Moeen taps one off his pads for a single before Jonny Bairstow comes down the wicket and plays the final two balls into the covers.

The pitch has lost a bit of pace. It's been frazzled by the sun yesterday as well.
Bairstow 29, Moeen 8
Short from Pat Cummins and it's well directed in to Jonny Bairstow's body, but he ducks under it safely. Bairstow then takes a hand off his bat to safely play down a delivery that rises on him. Good stuff all round.
There's a group of kids playing cricket at the back of the SCG somewhere. A young girl has just absolutely nailed a cover drive off one of her mates.

Ant Drake: People who weren’t at the SCG yesterday won’t be able to comprehend how hot it was. One of our group got heart palpitations and nearly fainted after only 20 minutes in the sun. The game probably should have been stopped. This is not a question of preparedness.
Ooft. Another peach from Nathan Lyon, turn and a bit extra off the surface as another ball goes spinning past Moeen's defensive push forward. Nervy times for Moeen - Lyon's found a better length now. A maiden.

Seven years ago, I was here as a spectator when England lifted the Ashes in a party for the Barmy Army, ex-pats and backpackers. Today is like witnessing the last rites. The Aussie party happened in Perth, while the Barmies have just been singing "We'll Meet Again". This Ashes series has died a death.

Another tickle off the pads by Jonny Bairstow brings him a couple, before he ducks successive short balls from Pat Cummins. One of those balls kept low - Tim Paine took it at ankle height. A look up to the dressing room shows Joe Root is padded up and watching on.
Meanwhile, on Twitter, Liam Gallagher is lending his support to Australia tennis player Nick Kyrgios. Anyone know what his thoughts are on James Vince?

Not sure if Paddy Emmerson (23:28) is joking or not, but very much hope he is - the man's been outside on the hottest day of the year for most of the day, as well as enduring the mental pressure of captaining an England team on the brink of defeat. Surely that warrants a tad of sympathy.

Very unfair comments about Root. Heat affects people differently. He's fair haired and English and in the middle it was 57 degrees. Get off his back.

A little shimmy down the pitch from Jonny Bairstow and he works Nathan Lyon off his pads and away for a single. Moeen watches the ball like a hawk, shuffling his bat down on anything too full, before Lyon turns the final ball of the over past his stumps.

It was like a lob wedge just creeping over the lip of the bunker. Lovely shot.

That must have hit a foothole.

Close! Moeen comes on strike, expecting the short ball and Pat Cummins goes full. Moeen throws his hands at it, gets the drive all wrong and the ball flies just over Mitch Marsh's head at point!
Marsh went up into the air after that like he was on a trampoline and the ball just skimmed past his fingertips. A sensational effort. Moeen's balance was off for that sort of shot.
Time for Steve Smith to start his fast bowler rotation - here's Pat Cummins.
