Now Rashid hits Finch on the pads! Big appeal from England but the umpire thinks he has hit it.

This looks pretty straight if Finch hasn't made contact with the bat.

Eoin Morgan is going to use the one review he has available.

Batsmen always say they're unlucky to get out chopping on but the ball really wasn't there to be cut.

Dragged on by Head! He played a cut shot at it with no footwork and has got an under edge on to his stumps.

    Head b Plunkett 5 (Aus 78-3)

There is Liam Plunkett's first wicket of 2018! A tad fortunate as Travis Head goes for a cut and chops on but Plunkett is delighted. A big clench of the fists from the bearded fast bowler before he is mobbed by his team-mates.

England are well on top in Australia. How times change!

  5. Aus 76-2published at 13.1 overs

A beauty. Liam Plunkett was England's leading ODI wicket-taker in 2017 don't forget and is unlucky not to take his first of 2018 here as he beats the driving Finch outside off-stump.

  6. Aus 76-2published at 13 overs

He may not be as well know as Glenn Maxwell who was a surprising omission from this Australia squad but Travis Head is playing in his 31st ODI. He's no newbie.

The left-handed number four drives Adil Rashid beautifully through extra cover to end another scrappy Adil Rashid over. Eight from it.

This was sent before the wicket. Over to you, Jack...

  8. Aus 68-2published at 12 overs

    Plunkett 2-0-12-0

Shot! A tad short from Liam Plunkett and Aaron Finch rocks back and crunches the ball over mid-wicket for four.

Now four more but this is a small victory for Plunkett. A perfect line and length and the ball takes the edge but with the first slip now moved into the covers the ball flies down to third man for four.

That's Finch's sixth four but the streakiest of the lot. He has 37 from 48 balls.

I'm surprised by the omission of Glenn Maxwell - we actually thought he might be in the Test squad but he's not made either team.

  10. Aus 58-2published at 11 overs

That wasn't really a very good over from Adil Rashid - not that he'll care. A couple of wides from the leg-spinner and the batsman had looked comfortable.

Looking at the replays it was an inside-edge from Smith. He was playing for the turn and only got a feather.

Travis Head is the new batter.

Trying to push that far away from the body is always a risk for a batsman. It looked like a tentative prod just to try and get off strike but that was a good length ball.

Smart work from Jos Buttler and Steve Smith has gone! The prized wicket. It didn't turn that much - it was just an indeterminate prod by Smith.

    Got him!

A very innocuous delivery from Adil Rashid outside off stump with little turn but Steve Smith gets a thin edge through to Buttler! There'll be no Smith marathon today.

Smith and Warner are gone inside the first 11 overs. Wood and Rashid with the wickets. I can hear you all typing "where have they been?" some more.

  16. Aus 52-1published at 10 overs

    Finch 26, Smith 21

Imaginative from Mark Wood. We've seen this in the past as Wood tries to catch Steve Smith out by bowling off just 10 or so yards rather than his full run up.

Smith pulls out of the delivery the first time and a dead ball is called. Wood repeats the trick but this time Smith is ready and clips a full toss for four.

That's the end of the powerplay. England will be pretty pleased with that. Just the one wicket but Australia haven't got away.

  18. Aus 44-1published at 9 overs

It's hard to believe this is the same MCG that the Test match was played on. This pitch is giving plenty of bounce from back of a length and Plunkett's first ball gets up a bit and hits Aaron Finch on the gloves. Finch is in a bit of discomfort but is good to continue.

Tidy start from Plunkett. Just two from the over but not as quick as Wood.

Now then. A second England bowler with a bit of pace is introduced into the attack.

Here's Liam Plunkett, replacing Chris Woakes. His absence from the Test squad was stranger than Wood's in my opinion.

    What can he produce here?

England will at least know that Steve Smith will be limited by time in this series. There were times in the Tests where you did wonder whether you were going to die while watching Smith bat.
