  1. Aus 41-1published at 8 overs

    Finch 23, Smith 13

Wood has been brilliant here and I am as big a fan of his as anyone but I fear it's not quite that simple, Doctor Joker. If he was fit enough to bowl over 50 overs in a Test, surely he'd have played?

Regardless Wood keeps on impressing here. He beats Finch with a back-of-a-length beauty, the first of five dot balls to start his fourth over.

Finch nicks a single off the final ball but the Australians are showing the England quick plenty of respect.

Doctor Joker: Remove Strauss and remove whoever was involved in selecting the Ashes squad. How could you not involve a 90mph bowler like Wood?

  3. Aus 40-1published at 7 overs

    Four again!

A change from white kit to yellow hasn't taken Steve Smith out of the groove. He latches onto a full and wide delivery from Woakes and drills the ball through the covers in his ugly but effective style.

28 runs from Chris Woakes' first four overs.

Chris Woakes has not been at his best so far but Eoin Morgan is keeping Liam Plunkett up his sleeve.

  5. Aus 34-1published at 6.3 overs

    Finch 22, Smith 9

For anyone wondering the only ball bowled faster by an Englishman than that seventh ball at 92mph by Mark Wood was surprisingly from Jake Ball in the first Test.

Chris Woakes is struggling here. Another ball too short and Steve Smith whips one from his midriff and into the leg side for four.

Smith is away with his first boundary.

I love watching Mark Wood bowl. He's putting everything into these deliveries and keeps toppling over in his follow-through. There's a bit of a delay as Wood and Eoin Morgan scratch around at the popping crease before the bowler whizzes another narrowly past Finch's grille.

Not quite so good this time. A yard or so fuller and this time Finch can roll his wrists over the ball and pull to the deep square-leg boundary.

That's the first first boundary off Wood's bowling so far.

  8. Aus 23-1published at 5 overs

Wayward again from Woakes and this time he is called for a leg-side wide.

He follows that with five dot balls before Finch tucks a couple off his hip on the final ball. A quieter over from Finch after his electric start.

On his return from injury, Mark Wood is already at 92mph. Rapid.

That looked a good shout but height looks to be the issue. A foot fuller and Smith would have really been in trouble.

  11. Aus 20-1published at 4 over

    Finch 16, Smith 0

More pace. Serious pace from Mark Wood. Another bouncer over 90mph and it's too quick for Aaron Finch. The Aussie opener goes for a pull shot but the ball is through him before he completes the shot and into the gloves of Jos Buttler.

Now a huge appeal from Wood on the final ball of the over as he hits Steve Smith on the back thigh. Again it's too quick for the batsman. Wood looks towards his captain in the hope of a review but the general consensus is that was a little too high.

Excellent bowling from the Ashington bowler though.

This is such a big outfield there are going to be plenty of gaps for ones and quick twos for the batsmen today.

  14. Aus 17-1published at 3 overs

Steve Smith is the new batsman so you may all be able to head off for a quick nap if you fancy.

On the pitch, Chris Woakes continues to serve up and mixed bag. His first ball is down the leg side and Adil Rashid has to scramble to save a boundary at fine leg. Woakes then corrects before bowling wide outside the off stump this time and Finch frees his arms and collects a third four of his innings.

  15. Aus 10-1published at 2 overs

That's an outstanding first over for Mark Wood, tinged with a feeling of what might have been.

The final ball flew through at 90mph from the Durham bowler and earlier on in the over there was a diving chance for Eoin Morgan at cover. The England captain got a finger on the ball but couldn't cling on. It would have been a worldie but England got Warner two balls later anyway.

That's what pace does in Australia!

Brilliant from Mark Wood. He gets one to bounce off a length and the ball fires through, hitting the shoulder of David Warner's bat to give Joe Root the easiest of catches at slip.

    Hello!

A bit of zip from an England bowler. We've missed this.

Mark Wood, never quite fit enough to play in the Tests, whistles his first ball past David Warner's nose. Wood is up around 87mph already.

Not just Alex Hales, but all the England players and staff will have learnt a lot from what happened in Bristol. It's a real negative experience but hopefully they will learn from it and this tour. Hopefully it will make them better people and better players.
