  1. Aus 192-4published at 36 overs

Marsh cuts Wood and it's a rare blemish from Bairstow on the boundary, the ball squeezes through his hands and then through his legs and over the ropes, a gaggle of forthright Australians, many of whom have enjoyed the hospitality, share their feelings with him.

Adil Rashid has been excellent. The required rate is now up at eight an over.

  3. Aus 184-4published at 35 overs

It's Rashid who returns for his sixth over. They are still showing replays of that Smith dismissal, but sensibly not focusing on the skipper's mouth as he makes his way back to the pavilion. It was complicated by the white tips on the edge of Buttler's gloves merging into the ball and one angle saw the ball disappear behind the curvature of the square. Stoinis is the new man and he drives Rashid for two.

Eoin Morgan has had his hands tied because of Liam Plunkett - he has been pretty predictable because he has had to bowl the spinners.

  5. Aus 181-4published at 34 overs

    Target 303

Confirmation from the dressing room that Plunkett will not return tonight, but Root has bowled his overs now. Wood and Woakes both have four overs left.

It's an excellent bit of work from Jos Buttler. England are elated.

It did look like it could have hit the ground, but there was no certainty to it.

It is incredibly hard to get 100% clarity whether it has carried. It's a huge moment in the game.

Poor old Kumar Dharmasena is the third umpire, charged with the responsibility of deciding whether Smith stays or goes.

It doesn't look great, but replays never look great - slow-mos always make it look worse. Whether the ball went straight into his hands or into the deck and then into his hands, I'm not sure.

The old cameras foreshortening things could play a key part here. The crowd don't like it, that's for sure - there are boos ringing around the ground. Different angles prompt different reactions.

Buttler is convinced he's taken it. He's very confident.

Smith looks to be out here, caught behind, but he is unconvinced and they are going to take a look upstairs. The soft signal is out.

England need to find a wicket from somewhere.

  17. Aus 178-3published at 33 overs

    Target 303

After eight overs without a boundary, Smith heaves Moeen into the leg-side for four, the 14th of the innings, in addition to those three sixes from Finch, which Australia could do with a few more of.

You can tell when Steve Smith is not full happy because there are more taps of the knee, arm, back of the head etc.

  19. Aus 169-3published at 32 overs

    Target 303

Smith scored 687 runs in seven innings in the Ashes as we all well remember but he is struggling a little for timing here, 40 from 62 so far. Root has recovered well and has completed the 8.4 overs that needed to be made up after the injury to Plunkett.

  20. Aus 166-3published at 31 overs

    Target 303

Some turn there for Moeen, Marsh gives it the kitchen sink but it beats everything, bouncing over the middle stump and through Buttler to allow three byes to the total.

The first Hey Jude of the day rings around the ground between overs on the PA.
