  1. Aus 160-3published at 30 overs

Floodlights blazing brightly now, will it aid batting conditions as Smith hoped when deciding to bowl first earlier? A final slither of glorious sunset, a little like the flash of red on the bottom of the England shirts.

Root returns and it's a much better one, just singles conceded.

As you have a sunset, we have a sunrise on Shetland. Great commentary and a lovely way to spend the night. Thank you all.

    Target 303

No spin for Moeen and his five overs have gone for 28, Smith cutting his final delivery behind square for two to move to 35.

Have you prepared your Sunday lunch in advance, Mike? Will the Yorkshire pudding not go soggy when you microwave it?

  5. Aus 150-3published at 28 overs

Steady again from Woakes, with just a sprinkling of singles again. A fourth successive over without a boundary and the required rate is nudging seven, which seems paltry given Buttler's exploits. But do Australia have anyone capable of such an innings?

  6. Aus 148-3published at 27 overs

    Target 303

After the glorious sunshine there is a spectacular sunset in Sydney this evening as Moeen Ali replaces Rashid. He may have failed again with the bat but it's a steady over from Moeen, just singles conceded.

I do love those pavilions at the SCG. In this age of soulless concrete bowls for sporting arenas, particularly in football, it's one of the best arenas in the world in my opinion.

Why on earth would the ECB tell Australia that Plunkett won’t bowl again? Why not keep them guessing rather than telling them Root needs to bowl eight overs? Crazy.

  8. Aus 144-3published at 26 overs

    Target 303

Plunkett's suspected hamstring injury is confirmed. They've got the frozen peas on it but it's unlikely he will bowl again in this innings. Woakes varies his pace cleverly and concedes only three.

Australia's required run-rate is still above six and a half an over, so they're going to have to attack.

Thanks Jack. It could be a tight finish, 162 more needed from 25 overs and England a man down, with Liam Plunkett off the field.

Root replaced Plunkett mid-over but, after his two wickets the other day, he conceded 53 from his 6.4 - he has been replaced by Chris Woakes.

England were 116-4 at the same stage, but of course we then had that explosive finish from Buttler and Woakes, 76 added in the last six.

  11. Aus 141-3published at 25 overs

    Need 162 more to win

Adil Rashid is offering admirable control at the other end. Just two singles available off the first four balls of his latest over.

Smith works the fifth round the corner for one, before Marsh cuts away and Woakes puts in a fine diving stop on the boundary to keep it to two.

With the game firmly in the balance, I'll hand you over to Jamie Lillywhite to take you through to the finish...

He's not known for his finesse, Mitch Marsh, when he hits it, it stays hit.

  13. Aus 136-3published at 24 overs

    Target 303

Morgan does keep Root on to get through more overs, but Marsh is looking to attack, rocking back to batter it away through the covers for four.

A couple more to Marsh and then Root drags it down, allowing the Aussie to pull powerfully away to the fence.

Root snatches his cap off the umpire and yells in frustration at himself. Morgan might need to take him out of the firing line for now.

You could see the Australians wanted to really go after Joe Root to give Eoin Morgan a real problem. He needs to get eight overs out of Root and if he can get through some quickly that will be important for England.

  15. Aus 126-3published at 23 overs

With Plunkett off, England especially need Moeen and Rashid to bowl superbly well here.

The leg-spinner is keeping up his end of that bargain with another fine over, just three off it.

England needed a spinner in the Ashes and had the perfect solution in Rashid sat there all along. Selectors should be collectively cuffed around the ear for missing him in favour of the out of form Moeen.

  17. Plunkett unlikely to returnpublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2018

An update from the ECB on Liam Plunkett, who pulled up during his second over and left the field.

"Liam Plunkett has injured his left hamstring. It's being iced and he will be re-assessed again shortly. Unlikely to return at this stage."

  18. Aus 123-3published at 22 overs

    Smith 25, M Marsh 5

The dismissal of Finch allows Morgan to keep Root on for now and the off-spinner rewards him with a tighter over, conceding six off it.

Other than Jos Buttler, no-one has gone on to get that big score yet. Finch looked settled and it was well bowled by Rashid. A brave decision by the umpire.

Finch looked supremely confident when he reviewed that - perhaps thinking he'd got some bat on it.

He didn't and here's where it was hitting...
