The "big show" is the new bowler, the bearded Glenn Maxwell brought on to send down some off spinners and after being thumped for four he dismisses the England captain, who gets a leading edge and is caught at mid-off.

  2. 6 runs

    Eng 88-2published at 9 overs

    Malan 38, Morgan 16

Big Billy is back after only three two dots in his first two overs which cost 27. He concedes a wide for height, signalled by helmeted umpire Abood and it's a bit of a mixture with some full tosses. Malan gets perfectly into position to launch the final ball over mid-wicket for his second six.

Travis Head comes into the attack for some off-spin but Morgan pummels a full toss and latches on to a wide one to launch a mighty six over cover

  6. Eng 65-2published at 7 overs

    Malan 31, Morgan 2

Captain Morgan is the new man. A fine over from slow left-armer Agar, the first without a boundary.

That's a very, very good catch as Malan was blocking his view.

  8. wicket

    Hales c&b Agar 22 (Eng 60-2)

    Ashton AgarImage source, Getty Images

Wow! Ashton Agar looks very different from the curly-haired kid who blasted that 98 at number 11 in the 2015 Ashes. He's got a grade 1 shaved head but he's struck first ball, swiftly moving around non-striker Malan to pouch a slick caught and bowled.

  9. Eng 60-1published at 6 overs

    Hales 22, Malan 28

Marcus Stoinis is the new bowler, chiselled of jaw, chewing of gum. He deceives Malan with one slower ball but when he tries another Malan seizes on to it and thumps it over cover for four, before pulling the next one for four more. England still going at 10 an over.

Running between the wickets is something Alex Hales can improve on - I certainly didn't appreciate it sometimes when I played with him! But I love his intent between the wickets so far today.

  11. Eng 50-1published at 5 overs

    Hales 21, Malan 19

Big Billy is whipped out of the attack after conceding 27 from his first two overs but Andrew Tye's first ball is unceremoniously hooked by Hales to the fine-leg fence and the 50 comes up for England.

  12. Eng 42-1published at 4 overs

    Hales 15, Malan 17

It looks black to me but we're told that's a dark green kit the Australians are wearing. Hales keeps the boundaries flowing, backing away to smear Richardson for two more fours. Six fours and a six in the first four overs.

Nothing more than a wristy flick and he's hit it for six!

  14. 6 runs

    Eng 33-1published at 3 overs

    Hales 6, Malan 17

An attempted yorker from Stanlake but it's not quite in the sand shoes and Malan flicks it through mid-wicket for his first boundary, before driving a wide one at 144k's fluently through the covers for four more. He's not done there though, nonchalantly flicking the big paceman over fine leg for the first six of the day, measured at 77 metres.

England got off to a flyer in that over but Richardson dragged it back brilliantly. I thought it was a leg cutter that got Roy but actually he just jammed the ball deeper in his hand to send down a slower one.

  16. Eng 17-1published at 2 overs

    Hales 6, Malan 1

Left-hander Dawid Malan, who scored a century in the Ashes, is the new man and he is safely off the mark.

Roy was absolutely done by that leg-cutter. He lost all his timing and tempo.

A slightly slower delivery and Roy was sucked in, trying to lift it over the in-field but just toe-ended it.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.3 overs

    Roy c Tye Richardson 9 (Eng 16-1)

Got him with the slower one. It was wide and Roy was committed but it looped tamely straight to the fielder's hands at short cover.

It was a tough chance down to his right but it's one that you'd expect Glenn Maxwell to take.
