It's almost a long hop from Ish Sodhi. It was short and all Hales could do was pick out that man. That is a big blow for England.

    Hales c De Grandhomme b Sodhi 47 (Eng 79-2)

    The dangerman gone.

Looking for a half-century, Alex Hales tries to strike another blow to Ish Sodhi, but he cannot get a clear strike away and the ball is straight down the throat of Colin de Grandhomme at deep mid-wicket.

    Collapse o'clock?

Lovely reserve sweep from Dawid Malan to open the ninth over. England need Alex Hales on strike, though.

I always found these part-timers an absolute nightmare. They're like liquorice allsorts - you never know what's going to come out.

    Target 197

England just working the ball around the pitch for a couple of singles.

It is an excellent over from part-timer Colin Munro.

    Desperation from New Zealand already?

On comes opening batsman Colin Munro, who has taken just two wickets in 42 matches.

Alex Hales has got so much power. He is on fire.

    Malan 15, Hales 46

Biiig spin from Ish Sodhi, but Dawid Malan is seeing it nicely now. He plays the shorter delivery late with a lovely drive to the cover boundary.

Last ball, can Sodhi end the over well? He cannot. It is Alex Hales who reaches forward and sweeps a six to the leg side again. Brutal.

Ish Sodhi in for a bit of leg-spin.

England are in a great position - they are going along nicely.

    Malan 10, Hales 40

A better over from Tim Southee...

...until Dawid Malan clubs a boundary on the leg side.

A pressure-relieving blow from the England number three.

Inside edge, another boundary?? No! Trent Boult keeps it in and England run three.

New Zealand were about this at the end of six overs, so if England have another good over it gets them ahead of the game.

    Hales 39 off 17 balls

Another couple of hefty blows from Alex Hales, but one these occasions he cannot get his efforts past the fielders in black.

Hales is not to be outdone though, using his nous to guide the ball between two NZ players towards third man for four.

And then a flat six on the leg side, before carving a four the other side.

Oh my goodness, brilliant batting. 20 off it.

You get the feeling with some of the shots that Hales is playing, he's getting the free flow of the bat going.
