Well, that was an intriguing ODI - a break from the bish bash bosh high-scoring games that we mostly saw in Australia.

Join us in the small hours of Wednesday for the second ODI in Mount Maunganui, which starts at 01:00 GMT. If this match is anything to go by, we should be in for a cracking series.

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, who top-scored for England with 79: "There were a couple moments when you lose those games. Maybe in the field we were not quite as good as we can be. And with the bat if he had wickets in hand we could have pushed the button a bit earlier.

"Tim Southee and Trent Boult bowled really well at the death, They had a few plans and executed it really well. It's tough to know when to go really hard at them. I know Tim's game really well. It's both a help and hindrance knowing someone so well! You come up with plans for them but they come up plans for you as well."

David: England lose with Ben Stokes playing. Thought he was supposed to be the best player in the world.

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler: "New Zealand batted well. We know Tom Latham's strength is playing spin and he didn't let Moeen Ali settle while Ross Taylor showed all his experience. And all credit to Mitchell Santner at the end who got a few out the screws."

Dubsguy: England still lack that cutting edge and ruthlessness that really marks the world class ODI teams. Very poor result given the position we were in after 10 overs.

Ben Stokes was a little ring rusty today but has lost none of the fire in his belly. He'll have a big part to play in the rest of this tour, starting with the next ODI on Wednesday.

M A Bennett: No-one snatches defeat from the jaws of victory quite like England.

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, on Ben Stokes' comeback: "Ben bowled the quickest of the lot. He hit the gloves hard. We saw in the nets he was generating good pace.

"It is fantastic to have him back in all three facets of the game. We are delighted he is back."

James Gulleford: Only on man to blame for that England defeat and that’s Eoin Morgan. Awful captaincy under pressure. Adil Rashid should never have bowled that over and field for the tail rubbish with fine fielders up! Out of his depth #morganout, external.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "Guys have roles and it was great today to see Ross, who has been in great form this season, do that again; for Tom Latham to play the way he did; and for Mitchell Santner - we know he can hit a big ball - to do that at the end."

Peter: There was a time when 9 off the last over was a big ask - getting them off just 2 legitimate deliveries is still a bit unnecessary though.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "England had a competitive total and it required some skilful batting to get over the line - and we certainly saw that with the partnership between Tom Latham and Ross Taylor.

"It was a very good game of cricket - a very even game of cricket. Credit to England - it was a very tough game that ebbed and flowed. It's nice to get over the line."

England captain Eoin Morgan: "There was not much between the sides. It was a competitive game and we posted a good score on the board thanks to knocks from Joe Root, Jason Roy and Jos Buttler. We made good inroads early on to get in the hunt. Ross Taylor played a great knock as they fought back. It was a match which really ebbed and flowed.

"When we broke that partnership between Ross Taylor and Tom Latham we were in the game but didn't quite have enough in the tank. New Zealand were the better side and just got the upper hand. It was a great game of cricket to be part of."

Man of the match Ross Taylor, who made 113 off 116 balls: "It was a hell of a game. England posted a tough total. The partnership with Tom was outstanding and Sants finished it off - that was the difference.

"Apart from Root, everyone struggled at the start of their innings. Tom manipulated the ball very well - it's a pleasure to bat with him. We were able to take it deep and were lucky to get the win."

There were a lot of mistakes in the field from England. Jos Buttler also had a poor night behind the stumps. With the ball they were OK and with the bat there is certainly improvement to be made. But they haven't been at their best and they ran New Zealand close.

Ross Taylor is named man of the match for his century and we'll hear from him, along with England captain Eoin Morgan and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, shortly.

It was an outsanding innings from Mitchell Santner but, for me, it was that partnership from Tom Latham and Ross Taylor which laid the foundation to launch from. Then it was the Santner show.
