Adil Rashid's last over was very poor. Jos Buttler went up to him talked to him and told him what to bowl and he bowled a medium pacer in the slot. That was appalling advice from Buttler. From then on Mitchell Santner had his eye in and New Zealand had their tails up.

That was a thrilling and quite intriguing match. England will probably wonder with they had quite enough runs on the board after a tame finish to their innings. Although Tim Southee and Trent Boult both bowled beautifully at the death.

England will get a chance to square the series on Wednesday when the sides meet again in the second ODI at Mount Maunganui.

  3. 'Santner destroyed England'published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2018

You have to hand it to Santner - that is a fantastic 45. He has destroyed England just when Ross Taylor looked like he had thrown it away for New Zealand.

  4. 6 runs

NZ win by three wicketspublished at 49.2 overs

Chris Woakes is smashed over cow corner for six by Mitchell Santner! New Zealand win with fours balls to spare.

Santner scratched around at the beginning of his innings but stepped up to the plate after Ross Taylor's dismissal.

It's a bit of a choke going on from England here. They need a wicket now.

  6. NZ 281-7published at 49.1 overs

NZ need 4 off 5 balls

It's a wide outside off stump and only four needed now.

  7. NZ 80-7published at 49.1 overs

NZ need 5 runs off 5 balls

Chris Woakes' first delivery is full in the blockhole but Mitchell Santner chops it between his legs and it races away for four. Woakes can only laugh at the misfortune.

There are too many people chatting for my liking. It should be the captain and bowler. You don't need the vice-captain and the vice-vice-captain's dog.

  9. Postpublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2018

A big discussion between England's senior players on who should bowl the last over and eventually the ball is given to Chris Woakes.

I would go for David Willey to bowl the last over but you turn to your premier bowler and that would be Chris Woakes. It''s all or nothing now. A wicket early in the over would make it difficult for NZ to chase.

  11. NZ 276-7published at 49 overs

NZ need 9 off 6 balls

Flat-batted down the ground by Santner and it's nine needed from the final over, which will be bowled by Woakes. Tainted Love by Soft Cell rings out somewhat incongruously over the PA as Stokes, Woakes, Buttler and Morgan discuss plans.

It was almost a close-your-eyes shot, but it proved effective.

  14. NZ 275-7published at 48.5 overs

NZ need 10 off 7 balls

Tom Curran's penultimate delivery goes for four. Mitchell Santner picks up the length and it is pulled through square leg to the boundary.

  15. NZ 271-7published at 48.4 overs

NZ need 14 off 8 balls

Dummying, stepping outside off stump, all manner of theatricals from Southee, but one run down the ground is the result.

  16. NZ 270-7published at 49.3 overs

NZ need 15 runs off 9 balls

Tom Curran bowls full and Mitchell Santner digs one out and they run a single.

    Great start to the over.

  18. NZ 269-7published at 48.2 overs

NZ need 16 off 10 balls

Southee backs away but just gets it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

  19. NZ 268-7published at 48.1 overs

NZ need 17 off 11 balls

Slower ball from Tom Curran and Mitchell Santner scrambles one down the ground.

  20. NZ 267-7published at 48 overs

NZ need 18 off 12 balls

Adil Rashid sends one wide. He takes a few deep breaths and Mitchell Santner whips it for one through mid-wicket before Rashid sends down a dot ball. Last ball - and a single off it. To long-on again. Santner keeps the strike.
