    Root 63, Buttler 0

James Taylor said earlier on TMS that spin would be key here and it's looking the case. New England batsman Jos Buttler unable to get Ish Sodhi away as he plays five dots. Rotating the strike important again here.

Done by the lack of pace, clever bowling by Santner holding it back, enticing that lap slog. Stokes had been frustrated by the lack of pace in the pitch.

    Stokes c Taylor b Santner 12 (Eng 140-4)

A disappointing international comeback for Ben Stokes then, and a clever piece of bowling from Mitchell Santner. A ball is tossed up and Stokes mistimes a slog sweep and the ball is sent high into the air and Ross Taylor scurries round to take a comfortable catch.

Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson shows the example to his team-mates with a fine diving grab at mid-off to deny Ben Stokes a boundary.

He can do little to a slightly shorter ball from Colin Munro off the fourth ball of Munro's over, though, which Joe Root dispatches to the boundary. The Yorkshireman quickly picks up the length, rocks back and it bounces once before crossing the rope.

It's been a brilliant fifty from Joe Root, showing the virtue of rotating the strike but also being able to hit the odd four. Each team has their glue and Joe Root certainly is that for England. They don't smash every ball but they score as quickly as anybody.

    Eng 130-3

That's fifty from Joe Root. This is his kind of surface, his kind of situation. An innings of substance will be integral to England's hopes here. He brings up his half-century with a faint glance through the vacant third man area off Colin de Grandhomme. Then off the final ball of the over he cuts square of the wicket for two. Confident stuff.

Paul: Everything is so pedestrianised. Is this a County Championship game or a charity game? Neither, it's an one-day international.

  8. Eng 122-3published at 26 overs

    Root 46, Stokes 9

Colin Munro continues and keeps it tight with some full length deliveries. England pinch a run off the last ball of the over after a shy at the stumps deflects into a gap. Good alertness from Ben Stokes to nick a single.

Thanks Jamie, it's finally poised in Hamilton at the moment. England coped pretty well in ODIs in Australia without Ben Stokes but in matches like this you sense he can be the difference maker.

  10. Eng 119-3published at 25 overs

    Root 45, Stokes 8

Boult continues and the England pair calmly manoeuvre the left-armer for a succession of singles. An intriguing passage of play ahead with Stokes and Root finding their feet again for England and to see what happens next, here's Timothy Abraham to take up the commentary.

  11. Eng 114-3published at 24 overs

    Root 42, Stokes 6

Sodhi again and the first Stokes boundary, reverse sweeping a near yorker forcefully away backward of point. The predicted score is 267 but plenty of firepower at the crease, with Buttler, Moeen, Woakes and Willey all still to come.

  12. dropped catch

    Eng 109-3

Boult back in the attack and there is a slip in place for Stokes as the sun briefly disappears behind some thickening cloud. A reprieve for the all-rounder - he pushes one back to Boult, it's a low chance and the bowler cannot cling on to it.

Nigel Cobbett: Morgan is the darling of the selectors and unusually got a decent score recently so he will be allowed to give his wicket away cheaply 20 consecutive times without fear of being dropped. That's the only reason he is the captain.

The first thing to notice is that Stokes has a bat with no sponsorship on the front, but the left-hander is safely away first ball with a single.

Eoin Morgan into position very quickly to hit that six, but then a ball later he is looked to play it leg side and it's held up and he offered a leading edge. It's a good bit of bowling from Sodhi.

    Morgan c Southee b Sodhi 8 (Eng 104-3)

Morgan thumpeds a long-hop over mid-wicket for six but Sodhi gets his revenge and a leading edge loops to mid-off. It's time for the return of Ben Stokes.

The ubiquitous Manchester United shirt in the crowd, they are found in every corner of the world, like those Calippo ice cream wrappers. Santner continues and Root sweeps him, not out of the middle, but with enough on it for the Yorkshireman's fourth boundary.

This is the phase of the game I quite enjoy, you need to try to raise those levels of runs with the spinners on. See if you can run two and respond with the running. A clever batsmen alters his position and attempts to access different shots. It's the period where the best batsmen shine.

Captain Morgan to the crease and a reminder that the returning Ben Stokes is due in next. Morgan off the mark third ball by pushing a looping Sodhi full toss to long-on for a single.
