  1. Eng 272-7published at 49 overs

    Buttler 70, Willey 10

A slower ball bouncer from Trent Boult is given as wide but an otherwise good over from the New Zealand paceman as England only reach the boundary once. Willey goes close with a slash over cover but Colin de Grandhomme dives to prevent it crossing the rope. Off Boult's final delivery, Buttler clubs one for six down the ground.

Ah New Zealand. I feel so genuinely grateful to Brendon McCullum and the Kiwis of 2015 for the way they showed England the way to go forward in ODI cricket that they are the one side I can actually handle defeat against..

  3. Eng 259-7published at 48 overs

    Buttler 64, Willey 2

A bit of a flat finish from England as New Zealand's pacemen dry up the boundaries. Tim Southee has bowled quite brilliantly. New batsman David Willey digs one into the pitch before Jos Buttler does likewise to keep the strike.

England will have wanted 300 but that looks beyond them now with 12 balls left.

Boult deserved that wicket - he was able to keep Buttler quiet.

Southee has lots of variations: the leg-cutter, off-cutter, slower ball bouncers and yorkers.

  7. Eng 247-6published at 46 overs

    Buttler 60, Woakes 6

That's New Zealand's spinners done. Tim Southee back into the attack and he is varying his pace superbly.

We saw in Australia how devastating Jos Buttler can be at this stage of the innings in terms of swinging the initiative England's way, but neither he nor Chris Woakes are able to find the boundary despite some big swipes. "Outstanding," New Zealand wicketkeeper Tom Latham says from behind the stumps. You can't argue with that, with just five taken from it.

The New Zealand spinners have bowled alright in parts but England will be delighted they have taken them for six an over. They have put them under pressure and found the boundary when they needed to.

  9. Eng 242-6published at 45 overs

    Buttler 58, Woakes 4

Jos Buttler's strong wrists allow him to crack one down the ground off Mitchell Santner for four but England are unable to find the rope again. Buttler flicks one to mid-wicket to take the strike.

That would have been a big wicket for New Zealand, Woakes slicing it up in the air. The key thing with those catches in the deep is to keep the eyes and head as still as possible.

  11. dropped catch

Woakes dropped on 2published at 43.5 overs

Could this be a big moment in these final few overs? Chris Woakes attempts a slog sweep off an Ish Sodhi deliver and it goes high in the air. Henry Nicholls dives after running round at deep mid-wicket but is unable to cling on.

  12. Eng 232-6published at 43 overs

    Buttler 51, Woakes 1

England work the ball into the gaps to take three singles but no boundaries, so Mitchell Santner will be pleased with that over. Chris Woakes is the new man at the crease with Jos Buttler.

That is an awful bit of cricket: a rank long hop, Moeen looking to advance down the wicket, it wasn't there, it was far too short. He was just starting to find his feet and that's a big loss for England.

    Moeen c Guptill b Sodhi 28 (Eng 228-6)

Just when he started to get going, Moeen Ali's eagerness to get down the pitch has cost him dearly. He chips a long hop from Isa Sodhi high into the air and into the hands of Martin Guptill, who does well to watch it with the sun in his eyes.

  18. Eng 228-5published at 41

    Buttler 48, Ali 28

Kane Williamson wastes no time in whipping a bowler out the attack if he takes a bit of tap does he? Mitchell Santner brought back but the boundaries still flow for England. The spinner twice drops in it a little short and Moeen Ali is on to it quick as a flash to pull the ball for consecutive boundaries.

Joe Root on his England return after being rested for the T20 tri-series: "It's always difficult to miss games but it's nice to get some runs.

"Credit to the New Zealand lads - they adapted well. Hopefully we can add a few more. It's hard to know how it will play under the lights with the dew factor."
