I agree that the preparation hasn't been right for Test cricket from either side but New Zealand have had exactly the same preparation time as England.

It's easy to say it's all about preparation but England simply didn't bat very well today.

People are asking who to blame rather than saying Trent Boult bowled well. Joe Root has been in great nick recently but he has been bowled out by a brilliant bit of swing bowling.

Muted appeals from the slip cordon after Craig Overton gets one to spit up at the top of Kane Williamson's pad. Again height is the issue and umpire Paul Reiffel is not in the slightest bit interest in taking it further.

Root has never had the air of a Test captain for me. Bairstow has. To turn this around, we need big and bold decisions right now. Make the swap for the second Test, and make it the swansongs of Cook and Broad....and Bayliss.

My wife has never played cricket before, but she is spending next week lambing and she has been to the Hagley Park Oval before. So she's better prepared than rest of the. England team and her diary is clear.

England's lack of penetration with the ball has inevitably lead to debates about whether Mark Wood should have been selected for this Test. Certainly this all looks quite routine and predictable from England's attack. Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls both able to work Chris Woakes into the leg side for a single apiece. That takes the Black Caps past the 100-mark for their lead.

Moeen Ali's penultimate delivery grips and spins. "Oh, hello" comes the cry from Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps but Kane Williamson's bat is some distance away from edging it. Two runs from the over. Chris Woakes set to return to the attack for England.

I think what we've learned here today is that James Vince is the lightning rod that protects the England batting line-up, and without him coming in at three we stand no chance of making our customary first-innings 190 all out.

Trent Boult just got it to swing enough earlier and he was bowling at nearly 85mph. He was too fast for Stokes and Root.

James Anderson was the pick of the England bowlers in Australia. He was extremely persistent and took the most wickets but he couldn't find much movement.

England desperately need to end the day on a high. Preferably with the wicket of Kane Williamson. The Kiws skipper has 17 Test centuries to his and you would not be surprised to see him make it 18. Stuart Broad sees three singles milked off his 15th over.

Dan Kitchingman: Get rid of Bayliss for heaven's sake, this Test side has only gone backwards. Pathetic.

Jack Walton: Just woke up. Did England forget to take their bats onto the field, or were they trying to invent a new version of the sport, where you play with just your shins!

Dave W: Williamson is in the mix for the best batsman in the world but if you like technically correct run scoring shots, he is by far the best to watch.

Mill Stone Grit: Quite an encouraging morning’s cricket from my point of view. I now know, without even playing, that I’m as good a batter as at least 5 current England players.

Fairly pedestrian stuff now from both sides as Moeen Ali sees two taken off his over. Stuart Broad to continue at the other end.

Kane Williamson shows the maker's name to Stuart Broad as the New Zeland captain blocks out a maiden. A slight bit of panic when a ball he blocks late bounces up behind but there appeared little danger of the ball knocking off the balls 11 overs remaining in the day now.

It's all over in Mumbai, where Australia have trounced India in the tri-series opener.

Australia looked pretty rattled in conceding 152-5, but have knocked them off with almost two overs to spare.

The Brabourne Stadium, where all the matches will be played, looks full of runs and the outfield is lightning fast, but neither side covered themselves in glory in the field.

England are just arriving to train before they play the Aussies tomorrow.

Moeen Ali into the attack. He took some tap in his first over to Kane Williamson but has bowled economically since that point without really looking like taking a wicket. Again he's fairly tight with his lines and lengths as New Zealand milk five singles but maybe England need something more attacking.

Just waking up? Go back to sleep. Trust me - you won't like what you are about to read,.

New Zealand are currently batting in the final session but England have already been bowled out for just 58 - their sixth lowest total in Test history.

There were five ducks on the England scorecard as Joe Root's side were blown away by Trent Boult in particular who took six wickets.

The pink ball swung but the technique of the England batsmen was horribly exposed.

It actually could have been even worse. England were 27-9 at one point in danger of record their worst total in Test history before an unbeaten 33 from Craig Overton.

In reply, New Zealand have lost three wickets but their lead is already closing on 100 and Kane Williamson has batted supremely.

Henry Nicholls watchful against Stuart Broad. This is quite attritional cricket from this New Zaland pair as they look to tighten their grip on the game.

Francis Edwards: I know Mark Wood is really inconsistent and averages over 40 in both formats, but isn't he better than Overton's dobbers?

Rachel T: Useful fact learned today: Lambing is, in fact, not adequate preparation for Test Cricket.

Marcus Eley: Have England batsmen forgotten how to play test cricket? Is the ascendancy of the short form game in danger of consigning test cricket and the way it needs to be played to the history books?
