Williamson is way short of his ground but has Woakes got a finger on it?

The replays are really inconclusive. Woakes appealed so he must think it has touched it but he's the only one who can know here. You can't tell on the replays.

    The crowd are booing Woakes.

  2. Umpire reviewpublished at 06:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2018

Now then. Kane Williamson might be run out in the worst possible way here.

Ross Taylor has smashed the ball into the stumps at the non-striker's end and bowler Chris Woakes reckons he's got a finger on it.

    The umpires take it upstairs.

We're into proper day-night mode now. Stuart Broad has four shadows from the floodlights as he waves his arms to move his fielders. This is the prime time to bowl but Kane Williamson looks so comfortable. He's such a good player. The New Zealand skipper brings up the New Zealand 100 with a comfortable single into the leg side.

Who thought we'd be in this position after England walked out to bat earlier?

Micky Boy: Only England can talk a good game after an Ashes drubbing. They barely ever take 10 wickets. You don't win Tests with a pudding bowling attack, add pudding batting to that and you may as well give up.

  5. NZ 99-2published at 41 overs

    Williamson 63, Taylor 6

Ross Taylor is away. First a couple into the leg side before he slashes the ball behind backward point for four. The crowd love it. They know how good Taylor is. England should too after his runs in the ODI series.

As more and more of you wake up this morning (and once Piers Morgan reaches for his phone) I think #BringBackKP might start trending.

Stuart Broad continues to test new man Ross Taylor. This has been a good start from the Nottinghamshire bowler. He's definitely making the effort to pitch the ball up.

His last delivery comes back in to the right handed Taylor and Broad has his hands on his head, thinking he might have got one onto the batsman pads. Not quite.

James Pockett: Waking up and checking the scores in this day/night Test, I can only assume England were batting in the dark - with the lights off.

  9. ouch!

    NZ 92-2published at 39 overs

    Williamson 62, Taylor 0

It's Chris Woakes not James Anderson to start again after the interval. He greets Williamson with a delivery that nips off the pitch and hits him where it hurts. Woakes is well aware of the pain he's caused his opponent and grimaces in his follow-through. The crowd "oooooh" as well when the replay is played.

Good from Woakes. A maiden but Williamson's defence is rock solid.

  10. NZ 92-2published at 38 overs

Broad raises the pink ball in appreciation as the crowd applaud his achievement but it's an understated celebration.

Ross Taylor is the new batsman. A big moment in this game, here. These two are New Zealand's best two batsmen.

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

He has taken his 400th wicket without a smile.

I think it's appropriate really because England have had a poor two sessions. It was a strange reaction because Broad and everyone else knows this has been a calamitous day.

Breakthrough! Welcome to the 400 club, Mr Stuart Broad.

It's been a wretched day for England so far but one Stuart Broad will remember.

He becomes just the second Englishman to take 400 Test wickets. He's bowled better deliveries - this one is on Tom Latham's pads and the Kiwi just flicks the ball to Chris Woakes at mid-wicket, but Broad and England won't care.

The field is pretty much all in shade now. The floodlights are on and, while there's still a fair bit of natural light, I don't think it'll be around for long.

It'll be Stuart Broad to start us off.

England need to pick up some wickets in this session - they have to.

This night session was meant to be what this first day was all about with the pink ball hooping around in New Zealand for the first time. I fear the story of day one was done and dusted within the first session.

Anyway, if England are to have any hope in this match they're going to have to have a session under lights like they did in the second innings at Adelaide in the Ashes.

Can they do it? We're about to find out.

The Daily Mirror's Dean Wilson: "If they lose this series out here then perhaps it will refocus their minds to get back up to a standard because, as it stands, I don't think this England team is as good as they think they are."

There was a pretty consistent theme to the England innings. Miserable English batsmen and jubilant New Zealand bowlers.
