Jack Mendel: Woakes could easily finish top scorer if he goes past Stokes' 66. Would be odd if he and Overton were top scorers in the two innings. Perhaps a signal of the problem... top order runs.

The crowd looks to be increasing here late in the Auckland evening and they're getting right into this. Neil Wagner crashes a bouncer into Stuart Broad's ribs and they roar in approval. Wagner stares at Broad. Broad stares back, chewing gum like Sir Alex Ferguson. Proper theatre.

  3. What you've missedpublished at 07:34 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

If you're an England fan just waking up, the good news is that they're still batting - when many of you might have expected them to have lost by now.

The bad news is that New Zealand only need two more wickets to win.

Beginning the day on 132-3, England have twice lost wickets just before intervals - with Moeen Ali (28) and Ben Stokes (66) the men dismissed. Stokes had added 83 with Chris Woakes, who's still there but only has Broad and Anderson left to accompany him.

It's a pretty benign surface - pretty much just a third-day pitch because of the rain. It's not been difficult to get in and stay in - New Zealand have had to work pretty hard for their wickets. Broad managed to bat for several hours against New Zealand on this ground five years ago.

Ha. Here's hoping, Charles. Any dreams on the lottery numbers?

Stuart Broad is still not happy with his thumb but he's going to continue. He steals a single to get off strike early in Todd Astle's over.

There is a heart-in-mouth moment as Chris Woakes plays and misses but he improves to drive a beautiful four through the overs. Runs could still be crucial.

Luke Howles: It may be me, but Chris Woakes always seems to put in a batting performance when the top order fail, invaluable!

Charles Fairs: I don't want to jinx it, but I had a dream a couple of nights ago that Chris Woakes saved this Test with the bat. If I turn out to be Nostradamus, I'll be very pleased.

  7. Physio on for Broadpublished at 07:28 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

It gets worse for England. Stuart Broad is in trouble with an injury here.

It seems he has injured his thump scrambling to make his ground in the run out opportunity in the last over.

The physio is on with his tape and a few tablets. It's Broad's bowling hand too, not that England will be thinking about that now.

  8. 'You've got to stay in line'published at 07:26 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special

You've got to stay in line against these short balls as some of them aren't bouncing as much as the others.

Jeepers. With a relative lack of pace Neil Wagner shouldn't really be threatening but he really is. He's full of heart as well. One bouncer whizzes past Chris Woakes' grille and then the England batsman can't resist a pull shot two balls later. He doesn't make particularly good contact and there's yelps of catch but the ball goes down to fine leg for four.

  11. Eng 306-8published at 119.1 overs

What are you doing, England? Stuart Broad has grass stains all up his cream sweater after a full-length dive to try and make his ground running for a risky two.

    There's just no need.

A direct hit and Broad was gone.

  12. Eng 304-8published at 119 overs

    Minimum 26 overs remaining

Stuart Broad played a massive hand for England with a rear-guard effort five years ago as they saved a draw and he'll have to do it again.

He's got plenty of company around the bat but survives he first ball. Just.

  13. 'That's the danger of the leg-spinner'published at 07:20 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special

That's the danger with a spinner like this - if you don't pick it, it gives Astle a chance, and underlines the decision to go with the leg-spinner against the lower order.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 118.5 overs

Overton lbw Astle 3 (Eng 304-8)

It's actually only umpire's call as the ball-tracking shows the ball would have clipped the top of the stumps but that's good enough for New Zealand.

A lovely delivery from Astle and New Zealand are closing in.

    Two wickets to win.

  15. 'It was the wrong 'un'published at 07:18 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special

They'll review it as they don't want to lose any more wickets this early. It was the wrong 'un, beat the bat of Overton as he pushed forward - but did it hit him outside the line of off stump?

  16. England reviewpublished at 07:18 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

Craig Overton is gone here surely. He looks absolutely plumb. Spinner Todd Astle deceives him with a googly.

Overton asks for the review but I'm not confident. The umpire has given it out.

  17. Wagner's short-pitched attackpublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Simon Mann
    BBC Test Match Special commentator

The umpire's just signalled one short ball for the over from Wagner - but I'd estimate that at least 80% of his deliveries today have been short.

  18. Eng 304-7published at 118 overs

    Woakes 39, Overton 3

If you had any hopes of England rattling their way into the lead here then forget it. Craig Overton makes no attempt to play the first five deliveries before a push for three to get off the mark. The first five deliveries were all short from Wagner. The plan is clear but Overton is doing well and using his height to his advantage to get right behind the ball.

Get Involved - 'No way should a batsman play that shot'published at 07:12 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Text 81111

I texted yesterday about psychology and lack of application to play long innings being the issue with this batting line-up. Exhibit A - that shot from Stokes. No way in the world a batsman should be playing that shot so close to the end of the session, even if we do revel in their shot making when things come off. Our batsmen need to learn it doesn’t matter if you have a few dot balls.

  20. Postpublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

For what feels like the 50th time in this match the pink ball is going to be changed because it has gone out of shape. Something needs to be done about this. England will be hoping this one doesn't start swinging.
