  1. 'The best time to bowl Astle'published at 07:10 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special

This is the best time for New Zealand to bowl Astle, as leg-spin can cause problems for tail-enders. Later on, runs become more important when the overs start running out.

  2. Eng 301-7published at 117 overs

    Minimum 28 overs remaining

More leg spin from the energetic Todd Astle. This is by no means a raging turner but he's just finding enough bite to make the ball straighten. Woakes looks pretty comfortable though and blocks out a third consecutive maiden after dinner.

  3. Eng 301-7published at 116 overs

    Trail by 68 runs

Just woke up? Yep, England are still batting. They have a chance. This one is going to get pretty tense if England can take it deep.

It's a small crowd inside Eden Park but they're giving plenty of support to the New Zealand's bustling bowler Neil Wagner. He's tried to shake up the batsmen with short-pitched bowling and does the same again to Overton. Th England all-rounder gloves a ball from in front of his nose down into the pitch and far enough out of the reach of short leg to prevent too much worry.

  4. 'Astle bowls too close to leg stump'published at 07:08 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jeremy Coney
Ex-New Zealand captain on Test Match Special

Todd Astle does bowl too close to the leg stump - he's asking a lot for the ball to come back so far, even if it does pitch in line. You've got 4ft 2ins of crease there - use it.

New Zealand want to be bowling as much as they can at Overton, rather than Woakes.

  5. Eng 301-7published at 07:04 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Minimum 30 overs remaining

It's not quite fully dark yet in Auckland but the full playing area is in shade. Leg-spinner Todd Astle continues after the break having looked dangerous beforehand. Chris Woakes has faced almost100 balls now and you'd think he'd have to take most of the strike in this session. He blocks out a maiden.

Jez Darr: So disappointing. I hadn't moved in my seat for an hour! Stokes was getting involved with Wagner leading up to the dismissal. Maybe someone should have gone out there with a towel and told our lads to drop anchor with minutes until the break.

theboywonder: I'm not the most avid follower of cricket but I do enjoy watching England. The issue for me isn’t how we are playing. It’s how badly this tour has been advertised! Get cricket back on terrestrial TV so we can all get behind it.

  7. Eng 301-7published at 114 overs

Chris Woakes and Stokes crossed while the ball was in the air for the Stokes wicket so it is the Warickshire man on strike first up after dinner.

He adds a single to give Craig Overton his first ball of the match which the all-rounder blocks.

  8. Eng 300-7published at 113.3 overs

    Trail by 69

Here we go then. I have to say I wasn't expecting to still be here after day one but this Test match is going to come down to the final session.

If England bat out this session they'll get a draw. If New Zealand take three more wickets they'll win the match.

    Play.

  9. What you've missedpublished at 06:59 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

If you're just joining us England are still fighting in this match but just before the dinner interval they suffered a huge blow in their bid to salvage a draw.

Ben Stokes, having batted all day for 66 runs, played an awful shot on the final ball before the break to be dismissed by Neil Wagner.

It means that England have just three wickets left with a minimum of 31.3 overs remaining in the match.

Chris Woakes is unbeaten on 38 and will be joined by Craig Overton. England are 69 runs behind New Zealand so there's a chance they could still force New Zealand to bat again.

The final session is just about to restart.

    BBC Test Match Special

Sunday Times cricket correspondent Simon Wilde: "I worry about Cook. He has talked to us a few times this winter about his mental state, almost volunteering himself down. That is a slight concern he is saying things like 'have I got the energy to go on?'.

Carlos: It took me a very long time to forgive Stokes for that final over in the World T20 final. Now we're back to square one. Why play that shot?

Tim Fry: After everything Stokes has been through, he has thrown away the chance for a bit of redemption - a century to save the match.

  14. 'A fall from grace for Smith'published at 06:48 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    BBC Test Match Special

Daily Mail cricket correspondent Paul Newman on TMS: "What a fall from grace it has been for Steve Smith. He scored all those runs against England and people were calling him the best since Bradman. What a fall from grace and it is not complete yet."

  15. 'Smith will be suspended'published at 06:45 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    BBC Test Match Special

Sunday Times cricket correspondent Simon Wilde on TMS: "Steve Smith is surely going to lose the captaincy, Lehmann will surely lose his position as coach. There might be some suspensions.

"With Warner it is a difficult one. We all know he is at the heart of everything but what can you pin on him? Smith may be suspended for a while but they don't have any matches for a while."

  16. Stokes' 'appalling' shotpublished at 06:44 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

This is what the shot from Ben Stokes looked like. A shocker just three balls before the break when batting to save the draw.

Jono Healey: Good old England. Just when it was turning we give them something from nothing. Less mad I saw one hour of cricket at Eden Park on Friday now!

Gaz Buckley: BST throwing kids’ sleeping pattern all over but allows for watching a bit of the Test. Cornflakes or Weetabix for breakfast, which will support England’s cause best?

  18. 'My comments were twisted by the Australian press'published at 06:38 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

A few years ago, I made some comments about Australia's sledging and broken arms [Michael Clarke had told James Anderson to 'get ready for a broken arm'] after the death of Phillip Hughes, and that got really twisted by the Australian press. Cheerleading by the Australian media has contributed to this.

If you're just joining us England are still alive in this match but they've just suffered a huge blow in their bid to salvage a draw.

Ben Stokes, having batted all day and shown great restraint throughout, has just played a poor shot on the final ball before the dinner interval to be dismissed by Neil Wagner.

It means that England have just three wickets left with a minimum of 31.3 overs remaining in the match.

Chris Woakes is unbeaten on 38 and will be joined by Craig Overton when play resumes at 07:00 BST.
