Thanks Tim. That is a massive, massive blow for England.

You have to say it is a terrible choice of shot from Stokes in the situation.

It now looks awfully tough for England to save the match with just the bowlers left.

Right, I'm off for a break of my own. I think I might have a lie down after that Ben Stokes dismissal. My colleague Matthew Henry will guide you through the rest of the match. Stick with us, it could be an Eden Park thriller part deux.

Hywel ap Rees: Absolutely brainless from Stokes. Throws it away three balls before break.

Michael Collins: I'm sorry, but that is just brainless cricket by Stokes. The LAST over before the break, NZ down in the dumps after a wicketless session, and then you play that T20 shot. Poor.

Mike M: Stokes' dismissal reminds me of a Rashid one couple years back against Pakistan in the UAE in a similar situation. Great innings trying to save the rest but thrown away on a silly unnecessary shot.

Stokes has smashed the door down for New Zealand. There was no need to play the shot. He could have just let it go.

    He had batted beautifully.

The players walk off for the dinner interval. Ben Stokes must have been knackered but he just had to survive three more balls until the break.

It all hangs on Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Craig Overton and James Anderson to save the game now.

It is extraordinary that England have lost a wicket on the final balls before the last three intervals.

  7. 'Appalling dismissal'published at 06:22 British Summer Time 26 March 2018

This is an appalling dismissal. Stokes had batted so well. It is a nightmare time to lose a wicket.

I can't believe he has played that shot.

Ben Stokes, what have you done?

Just three balls until the dinner interval and Stokes, who has played the short stuff well overall, is caught by Tim Southee after flashing a bouncer from Neil Wagner high in the air to point.

Just as England had got themselves into a good position. Could that prove the turning point?

The overs are ticking down for England. Todd Astle with an liquorice allsorts over as he bowls a half-tracker, a full one which breaks on the pitch and skids on to the boundary in amongst a few turning leggies. Six runs from the over

That was like Allan Donald against Michael Atherton back in the day from Neil Wagner.

Test match cricket at its best. Neil Wagner tears in and sends down a wicked bouncer. Ben Stokes manages to just about get out the way and keep his bat down. Wagner comes marching down the track and gives him a few verbals. Stokes gives him a smile and a nod. That was a crackerjack of a delivery. Stokes gets himself in line to block the last few balls of Wagner's over.

    Compelling stuff.

Five years ago England were seven down at the start of the final session when they went on to draw the Test at Eden Park against New Zealand.

    30 overs remaining.

Todd Astle round the wicket to Ben Stokes but again the Durham man's defensive technique is sound. He pushes a single to put Chris Woakes on strike and his concentration levels are such that he picks Astle's googly. This is excellent from England.

The last two overs have been good from England's point of view. Stokes and Woakes have just gone back to blocking a few.

Oval Pigeon: As egregious as the first innings performance was, it has produced a tense finish to what would otherwise have been a pretty dull match.

Boutros Boutros-Boden: Sat waiting in a taxi to take someone to the airport, not in slightest bit bothered when the entertainment is so thrilling.

Neil Wagner is putting everything into this spell but Chris Woakes is composed in the face of his barrage of short balls. His fifth delivery is the pick of the over as it rises sharply, but Woakes fends it off. A maiden over.

Ayo Oguntade: We can't be relying on players with a glorious past. Cook is no longer the player he was, Ali will never be the player we dream about.

Matt Chammings: Not sure why anyone's worried. Overton averages 81 with the bat in international day/night Test cricket.

Andy Sykes: Up early with a cranky six week old son. Never has a rearguard action been so compelling. This would be some escape after the shambles of day one

Todd Astle round the wicket to the left-handed Ben Stokes and he's spinning it out of the foot marks and gets some good turn. "Oh yes, really good Toddy" encourages BJ Watling from behind the stumps. However, Stokes' defence is solid.
