You can see why Trent Boult wanted that - it looked out.

It's pitched outside leg! Joe Root survives.
And that's both of New Zealand's reviews gone.
Hmm. It's nipped back in at Root, struck him on the knee roll.
Is it sliding down?

I think this has pitched outside leg stump. Though I'm completely guessing with the angle we are at.
The TV has just been showing Joe Root's dismissals in the last Test, which massively confused me for a second.
Oh, hello. We're having a review - Boult thinks he's got Root lbw.
I really like Neil Wagner. He's a good foil for when Boult and Southee go off, in terms of being able to keep the pressure on the batsmen.
He was brilliant in that Test against West Indies in December - he took 7-39 from 14.4 overs.

Fred Nerk: Wagner gets wickets. He also creates pressure that gets batsmen out at the other end.
Wagner 5-3-10-0
Now then! Wagner bends his back and hammers down a short ball and Joe Root makes a meal of his hook shot.
A top edge goes flying down towards backward square, where two fielders converge - and it drops just short of both of them! I'm not entirely sure that's what Root was intending.
Ooh. One over and out from Ish Sodhi. He's replaced by Neil Wagner.

Joe Root's looked in imperious touch so far, as he's done for most of the winter apart from that nought in the first innings at Auckland, which must have convinced him not to bat at number three again.
Trent Boult has dismissed Joe Root five times in nine matches. Three other bowlers have dismissed Root five times - Mitch Starc, Ryan Harris and Ravi Jadeja.
Mind you, that's a shot and a half from Root, as a flick of the wrists goes racing away to the boundary.
Joe Root is going to have Trent Boult to contend with after lunch.

Andy Lewis: To play Test cricket you need talent, application and nous. Our batsmen have the talent. They can learn the other two.
Stoneman 32, Root 20
Four! That's nice work from Mark Stoneman. It's just a touch short from Ish Sodhi and Stoneman chops, and chops hard, to hurry the ball through backward point.
Sodhi readjusts, and whirls down three dot balls to end the over.
Ish Sodhi is going to carry on after lunch - and Mark Stoneman pats the first ball gently back to him.

Stoneman was all over the shop in the first 45 minutes but he's stuck in there. Root, as he usually does, has made the game look a lot simpler.
Here are the umpires! We're going to have some cricket.
It is still absolutely beautiful weather in Christchurch.

Being here, it feels like New Zealand cricket are in touch with the people watching the game.
Very few people have come out today and said that David Warner deserves another chance - but that old warhorse Merv Hughes is one of them.
