Joel Heritage: One of the more staggering facts I've uncovered. Since the first Test of the 2017 summer, England have scored eight centuries. In the same time, Kohli and Smith have scored exactly the same number (in fewer Tests too). Was masked in England but hurting us greatly abroad.

    Bairstow 6, Stokes 3

England have got a long tail to come. Stuart Broad, then Mark Wood, Jack Leach on his debut and James Anderson.

Jonny Bairstow's not quite found his timing yet. He drives his way through another Trent Boult over, before getting a bit squared up by the final ball of the over. A maiden, and drinks to boot.

cufcfan616: We can't be content with Australia taking the headlines for all the wrong reasons, let's put on yet another abysmal performance with the bat. Wholesale changes needed in the squad and the coaches. starting with Cook, Bayliss & Ramprakash.

Mark: When will this sorry tour of the southern hemisphere end? Not soon enough, it has showed the English Test team & management to be woefully outclassed, even by NZ with only four million people. How can England sort this mess out, from past experience, do nothing!

  5. Eng 104-5published at 42 overs

A tidy over from Tim Southee, save for a thudding effort off the back foot from Ben Stokes that allows him and Jonny Bairstow to saunter through for a couple.

This is a key partnership. England cannot afford to fall away here and get bowled out on the first day.

  8. Eng 102-5published at 41 overs

It's Jonny Bairstow's turn to unfurl a drive but he doesn't quite time it, and he and Ben Stokes have to settle for a couple.

Bairstow jabs his bat onto a Trent Boult delivery that's sliding across him, but the leading edge rolls along the ground to the fielder.

Michelle Garland: I don't know lots about the county scene so can't call for so and so to come in. Are there really better players out there? Know Hameed showed some promise. Perhaps this summer we'll see new players emerge? Or have we got best available players?

    Stokes 4, Bairstow 1

Tim Southee's just tried a slower ball and, er, got it wrong on every level.

It's signalled wide by the umpire, which brings up the hundred for England. Southee rounds off the over with a ball that just nips past Stokes' bat.

That's the shot of the day by Ben Stokes.

  12. Eng 99-5published at 39.4 overs

Down the wicket comes Ben Stokes, but his drive doesn't beat the waiting fielder.

That one does, though! Shot! Stokes is off the mark with a boundary as he clobbers a cover drive past Colin de Grandhomme.

New Zealand put England in today not because of the pitch or overhead conditions. They just really wanted to bowl at this batting line up again.

There's a bit of movement there for Boult and Southee, no doubt about that.

But dearie me, there was a procession of tired techniques on show there. It's been a long old winter.

A clunky drive from Jonny Bairstow draws some admiring noises from the slip fielders, but the ball rolls rather tamely along the ground.

Bairstow, rather wisely, opts to play out a maiden against Trent Boult.

Make yourself a cup of tea and settle in to see if Stokes and Bairstow can salvage this innings. It's not a 94-5 pitch, folks.

The next batsman to come, I hear you ask? It's Stuart Broad, newly promoted to number eight.

He'll be hoping Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes can stave off New Zealand for as long as possible.

  18. Eng 95-5published at 38 overs

    Southee 11-2-25-3

Mark Stoneman was off the ground when he tried to play that delivery from Tim Southee. He was deep in his crease and got into an awkward angle, and the edge just flew to Tom Latham.

A run! Jonny Bairstow drops his hands and works away a welcome single.

Three wickets, nine balls, one run.

Jonny Bairstow is going to be the next man to try and stop the rot.

Southee has got it to grip a wee bit, with a little bit of seam. Stoneman has played off the back foot and edged it at a comfortable height to Latham.
