New Zealand recognise the fickle nature of England's batting - and have decided to put them in and expose them to the quicker bowlers.

  3. 'We've got to make a good start'published at 22:38 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

England captain Joe Root on TMS: "We've got to make sure we make a good start and play the first session very well, but we're a talented side and more than capable of making first-innings runs here."

Is Ben Stokes going to bowl in this match?

"It's something we're going to have to manage - we hope he might be able to contribute with the ball but if not, he's shown he's more than capable of playing as a batter."

  4. 'It might do a bit'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Sky Sports: "It looks like it might do a bit, although might brown off but that doesn't change our logic.

"We don't want to over invest either, we want to focus on the areas we need to hit and put in the hard yards. It would be nice to get a few early wickets and get into the middle order.

"We had some good lessons in Auckland and it's important we look to build on those strengths but also important to start again."

Huw Mabe: Leach’s selection is long overdue but there’s big pressure on him now it’s a four-man attack. Better hope Wood stays fit...

Mike Bell: Leach hopefully not a sucker for punishment. Good luck Jack.

So yes, in case events of the last week had taken your mind off England's mauling in Auckland, then as a reminder - the tourists are 1-0 down in the series after being thrashed by an innings and 49 runs.

Joe Root's side were bundled out for just 58 in the face of some majestic swing bowling by Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

It was the lowest ebb of a tough winter in Australia and New Zealand and has duly prompted changes.

Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes have been dropped, with Jack Leach set for his Test debut, with James Vince returning and Mark Wood also due to start in place of Craig Overton.

Full teams and the toss to follow shortly...

  9. Welcomepublished at 22:25 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

If there is such a thing as a good week to get bowled out for 58 in a Test, then England picked it.

In the seven days since New Zealand ripped through the hapless tourists in Auckland, the Australia ball-tampering scandal has become one of the biggest stories in the world.

From the heights of that 4-0 Ashes win to Steve Smith stripped of the captaincy and banned for a year, David Warner the same and Cameron Bancroft out for nine months, with coach Darren Lehmann set to step down after a Test match that will start tomorrow in a bizarre atmosphere.

The reaction - a mixture of outrage, bafflement, schadenfreude and hopefully some soul-searching about how the game should be played and what rules need tightening up.

For there is still a game to be played - welcome to live coverage of the second Test between New Zealand and England in Christchurch.
