That ball didn't get up as high as Root anticipated. It was well-directed by Southee, who checked on Root straight away.

I thought that had clipped the bat at first. Root wasn't playing at it. He's been struck right on the badge of the helmet. A strange piece of cricket.
Southee bangs it in short and Root tries to duck under it but the balls clatters into the badge on his helmet.
The England skipper is fine to continue, shrugging off the blow and telling Southee he's fine when the Kiwi bowler asks if he's OK.

Re: David (00:05), Vince and Stoneman have identical Test averages. They are both woeful. And both play for southern counties. If the selectors looked above London, they'd have a better team.
Rob from Derby
Joe Root is looking busy from the off, punching off the back foot for another single.
Mark Stoneman is more watchful to Colin de Grandhomme, playing out five dots.

Jack Mendel: Reality is - England can chop and change bowlers all we like. England's top order is the source of our problems. Cook with another failure.. when did he last get a ton in a winning cause when it mattered? Vince goes for 18... another failure.
Jack Williams: What is the point in James Vince and why do we keep persevering with him?
And Root is off the mark straight away, guiding a short one out to square leg for a single.
It's a pretty lazy shot from Vince, trying to just flick it through mid-wicket but playing all round it.
Here is captain Joe Root, back in at four...

Three lovely boundaries and James Vince has deceived us all, once again. It's an interesting one for England.
Vince lbw Southee 18 (Eng 38-2)
James Vince will not be reprieved for a third time - ball-tracking shows that was clipping leg stump on umpire's call so it stays with the on-field call.
England won't lose the review but they do lose Vince.
Another promising, eye-catching innings comes to yet another meek end.

Whether this is out or not, he's living dangerously.
A full one and he's missed it. Vince should be a goner.
Will Vince be third time lucky too?
Tim Southee gets it through onto the pads. Huge appeal and given.
Vince sends it upstairs. Looks to be a good shout though.
First wide ball from De Grandhomme and Stoneman slashes it away confidently to pick up three.
Good response from the all-rounder, a terrific delivery that looked to be swinging in but goes slightly the other way, with Stoneman playing inside it.
Drinks on board, Colin de Grandhomme is going to continue to Mark Stoneman...

David: Vince and Stoneman have identical Test records. Does Vince get more criticism because he's got more talent? Or have Stoneman's failures been hidden behind the rest of the top orders?
Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
It's been a fairly even stevens first hour.
So Mark Stoneman looked shaky early on but it was Alastair Cook the first to go, falling for just two as he had his off stump removed by a late swinging pearler by Trent Boult.
James Vince has survived two reviews and has played some gorgeous shots, while Stoneman has dug in after his early nerves.
An intriguing and tight first hour to the Test.

Vince really is one of the best looking batsmen that England have produced for a long time.
