The two sides of the debate summed up very well:

Bob: They say no one's place is guaranteed... shouldn't they insert an "except Cook of course" to that? He's been totally shocking since one reasonable score in the Ashes. Keep him in so I can laugh some more at him!

Dave Barlow: People calling for Cook to be dropped have short memories. Just a few Tests ago, he scored a double century. Whilst I know we can't just focus on past glories we need experience in this inexperienced and fragile team. Plus who is honestly going to do better?

  2. Eng 20-1published at 9 overs

Another testing over from Trent Boult, just one from it as Mark Stoneman knocks it into the covers.

It looks like a good cricket pitch. The one day wicket here was magnificent. It was a good contest between bat and ball - it turned a bit. I don't think this will be a great deal different, although there was more grass on the one day pitch.

  4. Eng 19-1published at 8.1 overs

Boult slides it past Stoneman's swipe and there's a strangled appeal. That was sliding well down leg though. On we go...

  5. Eng 19-1published at 8 overs

Before that lbw shout, Stoneman was fortunate to see a miscued pull shot land safe.

A better pull stroke finds the gap and brings him one after Vince rotates the strike.

Sure enough, that ball was bouncing over the stumps. James Vince survives the review. Good decision from Marais Erasmus.

Stuart Broad does appeals like that - he doesn't turn round, in the expectation that the finger will go up...

  9. New Zealand reviewpublished at 7.2 overs

Tim Southee gets one through James Vince's defensive prod and onto the pads.

Big appeal. Given not out but Kane Williamson sends it upstairs.

Looks to be a bit high.

Without Vince, Root has to bat at three, which he doesn't really want to do. It would be a brave man - or a lucky man - who would predict England's line-up for the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's.

  11. Eng 16-1published at 7 overs

James Vince gets off the mark in somewhat odd, if sweetly-timed fashion. Boult swings it into his legs and the Hampshire clips it through mid-wicket for four, slipping to the ground as he completes the stroke.

Shot! Vince punches the next one majestically down the ground for back-to-back boundaries.

Ruth Brooksbank: Never mind the Vince debate, we need to start the Cook debate. Much as I love him, surely his recent performances don't merit his continued selection?

Ben Thapa: Cook’s just played back to a half volley there. Once in a schools match aged 16, I bowled out a young kid like that and afterwards he disappeared into the nets for an hour to hit half volleys. His name? Alastair Cook.

Andy Vines: I genuinely think it is now time to put Cook out to pasture. He has been a wonderful servant to his country, but he can no longer trade on his past glories. Time to retire, Chef!

  13. Eng 8-1published at 6 overs

Southee gives Stoneman another working over but the England opener leaves and defends well.

A second maiden in a row for the hosts.

It's only the second time that Alastair Cook has been dismissed in single figures three times in a row, and the eighth time that Trent Boult's got him.

You lot already know what James Vince is doing, right?

He steps out positively to Boult, driving crisply straight to cover for no run.

He then follows it with a loose drive where he's fortunate not to edge off.

Crucially, he doesn't edge off though. These first two hours will be an immense test.

  16. Should Root bat at three or four?published at 23:17 British Summer Time 29 March 2018

    Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

We've already messed Joe Root up by making him captain and increasing the pressure on him, so why not let him bat at four, be happy and score millions. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Look at New Zealand - Kane Williamson is firing on all cylinders, Joe is only firing on two or three.

  17. Eng 8-1published at 4 overs

Stoneman finally get his front foot out to a full ball to time it nicely through the covers for a couple.

Southee responds with two even fuller ones that Stoneman first edges along the ground and then plays and misses at.

    Text 81111

How an earth is Vince getting a game? And why is our number one batsman in Root batting down at four again? Back up to three and play Foakes! I think I would prefer seeing Woakes at three than Vince!?

James Vince is fortunate to be playing.

  20. Eng 6-1published at 3 overs

The perennially under-pressure James Vince is in at three.

Boult strays too wide and Vince can leave his first two balls.
