Tim Southee made his Test debut three months after Stuart Broad. But Southee is playing his 60th Test here and Broad is making his 116th appearance.

Broad 2-0-10-1
A beauty from Stuart Broad, beating Kane Williamson as he comes forward to defend. Williamson puffs out his cheeks as Broad looks aghast.
There's extra bounce there from Broad, who whistles the final delivery just past Williamson's off stump.

Matt Arnot: Good thing about having Mark Wood in the side is that if we get NZ in a bit of trouble early on, we’ve got someone with the capability of blasting out the lower-middle order, rather than a battery of fast-medium plodders struggling to take 10 wickets.
Shot! That's a gorgeous cover drive by Kane Williamson, but Joe Root tears after it to keep it to three.
Jeet Raval, who wasn't having the best of times against Anderson, then plonks another couple of runs back past Stuart Broad.

Jeet Raval is probably the best Test opener in New Zealand right now but he's not been able to go on and get a big score. He's under pressure and could be vulnerable.
A leading edge from Jeet Raval just about beats the slip cordon. Which is no mean feet, because there's five of them hovering behind the batsman.
Joe Root wanders over for a chat with James Anderson before he bowls to Williamson, and Williamson promptly works a fullish delivery off his toes for a few. Oops. Raval then plays and misses at an absolute peach to end the over.

Dave Edge: If at 94-5 I was told England would be all out for 307, I'd have taken that!
Ed White: Another Test century watched thinking about the time my mate dropped Jonny Bairstow off my bowling at U13s because he’d forgotten his glasses. Time to let it go? No chance.
That's really nice from Stuart Broad. Just a touch fuller and Latham couldn't resist having a go at it.
Kane Williamson - who rocked up at the crease with his side 8-1 in Auckland - is the new man in, and he hustles three off his pads to get New Zealand going.

Stuart Broad got it full - it was almost a half volley but not quite and he induced the drive. England get Kane Williamson in early.
Latham c Bairstow b Broad 0 (NZ 0-1)
Gone! A three-ball duck for Tom Latham!
Latham couldn't resist having a big drive at Stuart Broad there. He threw his hands and the ball flew behind to Jonny Bairstow, who had to move to his left pretty sharpish to take the catch.
That's the fifth time Broad's dismissed Latham.
Here's Stuart Broad.
So that means it's the 150th time Broad and Anderson have opened the bowling for England.

Anderson has done Raval three times in a row there.
Ooft. Jeet Raval pushes forward and just about avoids getting a nick on a fine delivery from James Anderson.
And again! Oh, and once more for good measure! That's such a good over from Anderson, just getting the ball to nip away from the batsman at the last second.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad have opened the bowling together a record 149 times.
I hope Broad is taking the new ball here so they get to 150.
The next highest are Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis on 89.
Jeet Raval hoicks his bat up high and lets James Anderson's first ball go safely through to the slips.
Here we go, then.
Unsurprisingly, it'll be James Anderson to open the bowling for England.
Joe Root's going to have to find a couple of overs from somewhere.
This is Mark Wood's first Test since July 2017 and if they want him to bowl short, sharp spells, then they need a third bowler. There's no Chris Woakes or Craig Overton to bowl those long spells...

I'm slightly puzzled. We've watched England train and seen Ben Stokes bowling quite a lot. They say he can't bowl full tilt but I would be happy for him to run in and bowl a few overs just to see what happens.
Sport moves quickly - and Debora Mateus has sent us this Twitter picture of a Fulham-based hardware store looking to capture the emerging Antipodean sandpaper market...

Two Test hundreds this winter for Bairstow and a couple more in ODIs. Great batting. Four times he’s been caught playing the ramp down to third man, though. Might want to ditch that shot.
