Once you get past 300, you're right in the game, whatever the state of the wicket. The only point I draw from last night is that Wood and Leach came in - and the benefit of fresh minds was all too visible.
One of the best bits of yesterday?
Mark Wood notched his maiden Test half-century during his 95-run stand with Jonny Bairstow - and then realised he didn't know how to celebrate.
"I've known Jonny since we were 11, 12-years-old so he knows I like to have a laugh and keep things fun out there," Wood told Test Match Special.
"We just kept it simple and tried to have fun. I didn't know what to do when I got to 50. I couldn't stop smiling.
"Jonny told me to stop grinning but I just couldn't help it!"

I've got an apology to make. When Vic said yesterday that Jack Leach could bat, I'd heard that he was worse than Jimmy Anderson, but he's batted really well.

Hello! Ready for some cricket?
England will resume their first innings on 290-8 in about 30 minutes time.
Jonny Bairstow is resuming on 97, while he's got debutant Jack Leach - who I thought acquitted himself very well last night - is keeping him company on 10.
He's three runs away.
Can Jonny Bairstow notch his fifth Test century and try and get England towards a decent first innings total?
