Ben Wire: I guess that's like scoring a goal then conceding straight away. Pleased for Bairstow though. Hopefully Leach can eke out some turn and make his mark early.

A word for Jonny Bairstow, who has probably had the best winter out of anyone in the side.

The thing I like about Bairstow is that he does seem to adapt really well. He can shepherd the tail, be both aggressive and patient and his keeping has improved no end.

England have got a serviceable total, it's something to work with. It's still under par but it could've been so much worse.

This is still a good pitch to bat on. England have done well to get to 307 when they were wobbling about at 94-5, but there's a sense that they've missed a bit of an opportunity to make a properly demanding first innings total.

Trent Boult and Tim Southee have done what they did at Auckland and taken all 10 wickets between them again.

    That'll be that, then.

Jonny Bairstow knew he had to hit out, but he ends up guiding a Trent Boult short ball into the hands of Ross Taylor down at third man.

Several Black Caps players come jogging over to shake his hand as he leaves the field.

Jacob Whitehead: Bairstow vital to this England side as our only specialist batsman, after Cook’s decline, who performs admirably away from home.

Graham Hounslow: Leach reminds me of Jack Russell with his batting style! Well done JB.

It was a thickish edge and a comfortable catch, but Jack Leach has done a very good job for England.

James Anderson is going to try and keep Jonny Bairstow company for a bit.

Southee, meanwhile, is now New Zealand's fourth highest Test wicket taker, with 219 wickets from his 60 matches. I still remember his debut, where he cracked England's bowlers all over the place in Napier.

That's a beauty from Tim Southee. Very similar to the dismissal of Mark Stoneman. Although dare I say Jack Leach has looked a bit better with the bat than Stoneman in this Test.

    Ah.

That's a very nice delivery from Tim Southee, angled across and just nipping away from Jack Leach, and the ball kisses the edge of the bat and goes through to BJ Watling.

    That's six for Southee, too!

Bairstow has been very patient, getting there in singles. The crowd go up in applause to salute his very fine effort.

Jonny Bairstow just takes a moment to compose himself, before Jack Leach sees out the over.

He's become such an important player for England this winter, in Test and one-day cricket. It's been a genuine pleasure to see.

There it is! Test century number five for Jonny Bairstow!

A clip off the hips and Bairstow takes off straight away. He raises his arms towards the crowd, then bumps his bat against his chest before waving it towards the fans, who are giving him a standing ovation.

    A lovely moment.

A worrying note for our old friend Keith Flett at the Beard Liberation Front is that Bairstow is beardless in this Test. It could be his first beardless Test hundred.
