New Zealand have fought back from 36-5 to 176-5. With 7-2 fields, you encourage the bowler to bowl on the side with the seven men on it, and that meant for Leach, bowling outside the line of off stump. Really, you should be hitting middle and off every ball. A better way to go is to bowl straighter and have something like a 5-4 field.

The short-pitched bowling is worth a crack for a couple of overs, but it's been over-done today. New Zealand were the same - they went on it for too long.

  2. NZ 178-5published at 69 overs

Runs! Two of them, to be precise, as BJ Watling gets a leading edge that trails down to third man.

The shadows on the field are starting to lengthen. There's 12 overs left in the day.

Two overs of Ben Stokes is enough for the time being, as Mark Wood is back on.

You may or may not be surprised to know that this is Colin de Grandhomme's longest Test innings. And he's got a hundred before now!

Unwavering defence from Colin de Grandhomme as he faces up to James Anderson.

Anderson has figures of 19-5-43-2 so far.

Although Stokes has shortened his run-up, we've been watching the kph and he's got up to 139.

(That's 86mph for those of you who prefer imperial measurements!)

  7. NZ 176-5published at 67 overs

    Watling 74, De Grandhomme 72

Ben Stokes beats the outside edge of Colin de Grandhomme's bat, before the Black Caps batsman nabs a sneaky single.

The folks on TV are showing a slo-mo version of Stokes as he releases the ball. It looks as though he's done a bit of work on stopping his head from falling away as he bowls.

Matthew Lumby: Drinks break tune over the speakers at the cricket is Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer' but I think 'Sorry seems to be the hardest word' would have been better today?

  9. NZ 175-5published at 66 overs

BJ Watling, rather sensibly, decides to shoulder arms to everything else that James Anderson sends his way.

    Maiden.

Good to see England finally playing a spinner who knows his game and can hold up an end and who Root also appears to trust! Not the pitch he would have dreamed of for his debut but promising from Leach and gives the bowling attack balance.

First ball after drinks, and it's almost a wicket for James Anderson!

BJ Watling chases after a delivery outside his off stump and a bottom edge bounces just in front of a tumbling Jonny Bairstow.

Big Colin de Grandhomme's having a banana. I spent a lot of time being 12th man, and I don't recall ever bringing out a banana for anyone.

  13. drinks break

    NZ 175-5published at 65 overs

We've still got 16 overs to squeeze in and the close of play is meant to be at 06:00 BST. I know my maths is bad but I think we'll be going on after that.

Ben Stokes whirls his way through a skiddy sort of maiden, and the drinks are about to appear on the field.

Anderson is bowling to an 8-1 off-side field to De Grandhomme, with just one leg-side fielder very straight at mid-on. If De Grandhomme hits it gently to square leg, they could probably run five or six.

A languid single from BJ Watling takes this partnership to 138 runs.

This is New Zealand's second highest sixth wicket partnership. Martin Crowe and Adam Parore's stand of 141 in Manchester back in 1994 is the record.

Drama before a ball is bowled in the women's T20 tri-series final, with England captain Heather Knight ruled out by a hamstring injury sustained in the final group game.

Danielle Hazell takes over as skipper, winning the toss and asking Australia to bat first.

  17. NZ 173-5published at 63 overs

I don't know if the stump mics are slightly louder but it's picking up the player's conversations quite clearly when they come together to discuss a review, which is fairly entertaining.

Just a few singles here and there from Stokes' first over.

I think it flicked the pad. Everyone went up - it'll be lbw if anything, but I think it may be too high.
